    Hi Girls,

I read in the paper this morning, a review of a new ( to the UK cinema, at least ) film, entitled XXY.

It's directed by Lucia Puenzo, a first feature film by this Argentinian director.

The review gives a brief synopsis of the story-line .......................
Basically, the lead character, Alex, (played by Ines Efron) is a solitary, tomboy-ish 15 year old, living with her parents, in an isolated town. It emerges that Alex is a hermaphrodite.
Raised as a girl, she has taken hormones and other drugs to suppress any male characteristics.
Now she must decide whether to undergo an operation, that is, in effect, a castration.

The review goes on to say that her life is depicted with great sensitivity, in a thoughtful tale of indentity, individuality and the quest for love.

They rate it with 4 Stars (Very Good), so I just thought that I should bring this film to your attention.
It might well be worth seeing!

As I said, it,s a new release in the UK and Ireland. Possibly, as is normal, it's already been released in the US.
If so, and if any of our American sisters have seen it, what did you think of it ?

Anyone who sees it, maybe they could put a comment or review here for it, and let us know if it's good/bad or indifferent.

    Hugs,
    Angela. xx.

The film hits the german cinemas at the end of June. However,I suspect it'll be confined to those cinemas which aren't committed to Hollywood products, and that means that, since most of these cinemas take a summer break,it may well disappear without a trace except for GLBT film festivals.:(

So far, it hasn't shown in Dublin yet, either, but, in the near future, thereis a GLBT Film Festival here, and though I've not seen the programme yet, hopefully, this will be included.

    Hugs,
    Angela.

It hasn't made the local flea-pit yet. However,a bit of nit-picking is the order of the day. Despite the good reviews and,by all accounts, acceptable handling of the theme, the title is actually misleading.
XXY is actually Klinefelter's Syndrome which is nothing to do with
being Intersex/Hermaphrodite. It seems that the film maker was aware of this but that it was the film company which decided the title.Klinefelter's Syndrom is found only in men.Intersexes can be either XX or XY ( AIS ).
Don't let this stop you watching the film.

    lol & ciao

I saw the german version last week and it seems to me that the topic is very well handled.Laid back, perhaps, but all the better for it since not only the hero/ine's problems come to light but also those of the parents.Don't expect erudite,scientific/medical dialogue or documentary style background info pertaining to inter-
    sex/hermaphrodism/transsexuality etc etc.
My verdict? **** (4 stars). If and when it comes your way,go and see it.:)
I dread to think what a Hollywood remake would do with the topic!

I liked it. It was sweet and simple. The story was fairly straightforward and handled with a great deal of deftness I thought.

    Hi Angela,

    Thanks for bringing this up.

XXY has a healthy 7.4/10 average rating on IMDB.com and Rotten Tomatoes also give it a 70% rating. Both film sites have a host of very positive comments from people who have seen the film.

I'll certainly be looking out for it.

    Thanks again.

    Much love

    Hi Zoe and Penny,

Thanks for reviving this thread - I was totally unaware of XXY. It's now in my Netflix queue.

    Best,
