Now that, rough justice has finally cought up with Gadaffi, will Lybia, descend into a tribal turmoil that was seen in Iraque. Will the West continue to suck up, if a new dictator emerges. or a represive regime, Can secular socities like this handle democracy. In the past western governments have ignored what happens in these middle eastern countries, arms for oil, ignoring the fact they were being used to supress and ignore the human rights of vaste swathes of the inhabitants of these countries. Tentative ventures into liberating the oppressed in Somalia and other african countries where people, especially children are starving to death, where torture and tribal atrocities are common place.where greed and corruption is rife by ruling parties, abandoned, apparently because they have nothing we need, oil or minerals. or am I just too sceptical.
It would be very unusual to expect a Western style democracy in a country where tribal competition has been rampant for generations. At best, a coalition of tribes... with a hope for a journey to a Arab style democracy. My hope is that they dont get hijacked along the way and it turns into an Iranian style Theocracy.
Tribal government on a local level isn't so bad. Naturally, there could be bad tribal leaders but each tribe would have to work out how they would handle that. As for regional and national control a coalion would work best.
I'm against Theocracy - but we've got many here in the USA who appear to want one.
In yesterday's paper was an article about US Air Force having a "drone" base in Somalia. Why?
