Sunday Software Blues

Yesterday was a very frustrating day with the server going down about four times, once for about two hours.  The Canadians are off till nine o'clock on Monday morning (that's 3pm here) so I can't get any help from them.

The hosting company want to charge me $150 an hour to look at the server logs for me.  As I don't have that kind of money, I've taken to reading my huge Linux tome to try to figure out how to look at the logs myself.

Today (Sunday), I've managed to look at some of the logs but I haven't a clue what anything in them means.  I think I've also deleted the contents of the most important log, Spooler, by mistake 'coz I don't know what I'm doing.  AAAAAaaaaaaaggghhhh!!!  Stop the web, I want to get off!!!!!

I think I've also discovered a new bug which disables members accounts if they make any changes to their profiles and then emails me to say that they requested an upgrade but didn't pay!  That's the kind of thing you'd expect a nasty virus to do!

There appear to be loads of other bugs too, which are going to make my life difficult over the next few days.  Because the Canadions have rolled out this new software upgrade to all of their other customers too, they must be inundated with angry emails about all the bugs.  They obviously don't have time to mess about with our problems.

If we were not so heavily immersed in their software, I think I might start to look for another software company.  The Canadians have always been friendly but they are a very, very small outfit and don't seem to have enough staff to cope when something like this happens.  So very many of the technical problems we've had at Trannyweb have been because of buggy software - we must be getting a poor reputation for reliability around the web.

Some of it must be down to me too.  I'm not a proper programmer - just an amateur who bitten off more than she can chew.  I didn't get into this thing to be a computer boffin.  I just wanted to be a girl and run a community for like-minded people.

It's at times like this when I think of chucking it all in and putting the site up for sale, not that anyone would want to buy it with all these technical issues.

1303 on Sunday afternoon - I struggle on...
