Sometimes I think that we are cursed.  Honestly! I have spent much of the last three months working on the September issue of Frock Magazine and yesterday, it was finally finished.  When it was all uploaded and tested and found to be working correctly, I started work on a big advertising campaign to let all of our members know that it was published. Among other things, this involved sending out over 30,000 emails.  I was hopeful that we would be able to bring in a good number of new Frock subscribers but how wrong I was. I let the mailing go on overnight so it must have finished at around 2am. In the morning I checked my email, expecting to see lots of new subscribers but there wasn’t even one.  Not one!  How could that be?  Our magazine was well crafted and a good product full of the kind of articles and stories that TG people love so what could have gone wrong. I immediately started checking the Frock web site for problems at our end but couldn’t find any.  Then I saw an email from a potential customer who had given up trying to subscribe to our mag.   Tried subscribing myself and was blown away to discover that a notice had been put in place of the payment page, which said, “This product is no longer available as it has violated our Terms of Use Policy”.  What? The payment gateway in question, had already approved Frock Magazine so what was the problem?  I checked my email and found nothing from them telling me of any probs with our account or products.  Then I checked the account itself and again there was no mention of any problems at all.  Even the product itself was showing as “Approved” on their site. Yet they had scuppered any chance we had of selling good numbers of Frocks  in this quarter.  I was absolutely livid.  I wrote to them telling them so but have not had a reply yet. How dare they mess up our business like that.  If they had a problem with Frock they should have contacted me and said so rather than telling all of our potential customers instead. Irrespective of what they have to say, I think we will drop them now as they obviously cannot be relied upon in future.  Oooooh, I’m still soooooo cross! And Boy George hasn’t sent his answers back either!  I knew he wouldn’t.  Things just don’t seem to go right for me anymore.  Like I said, I think we're cursed!

Way back in May this year (2010) I sent a request to Boy George asking for an interview for Frock Magazine.  Well I didn't hear a thing until today, when I sent my request again and he replied within a couple of minutes. He's agreed to do the interview and I have sent him a heap of questions.  I'll be interested to see if he ever gets round to sending his replies back to me. Earlier in the year I sent a similar request to Alexis Arquette who also agreed to be interviewed.  But after sending her the interview questions I never heard a single thing. I wrote to her a few times asking if everything was okay but didn't get a reply. So, the lesson I learnt there is, just because a celebrity agrees to do something, don't count your chickens because they may never do it. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we are hoping to install a new suggestions and recommendations feature, which will allow users to make suggestions for friends and other content to other members.  It will also do a heap of other things that you might already be familiar with from Facebook.  I'm quite excited about that. On the down side, our developers have, after months of leading me on, just stepped back from transferring the data across from the old site.  Now I have to find some new developers, setting us back even more.  Boo-hiss!

Site testing continues apace.  We finally got the Member Connections thingy working yesterday and I'm most impressed.  It looks really good and I think when we get over 30,000 membership moved across from the old site, it will be amazing.   This job is a bit like building a new cruise ship.  The technology we're using is all state of the art and the site is just fantastic in comparison with our old stuff.  I can't wait to let our members in here.   Like building a ship though, it does take a long time and always way longer than originally envisaged.   In the meantime, members on the old site continue to moan and complain about it or just quit because of its poor design.  I so wish I could show them our new stuff and then I'm sure they'd stay.   Still lots of stuff to be done before we'll be in a position to unveil this masterpiece though.   We've got to get the Content Management System (CMS) in place and they haven't even finished writing it yet.   We also need to sort out the payment gateways to deal with our existing subscriptions and also new subs.  That's also still in development.   However, I am hoping to take possession of our new membership cards program later today.  That should be a real improvement on the previous incarnation and it will allow our members to print out their cards.  They'll be exactly the same size as their credit cards and will be easy to laminate.   The Events system is still not working properly although slightly better than it did and we also have a problem using Facebook logins, although I suspect that could be down to FB.   More soon...   Hugs, Katie   x

I have just spent ages installing 18 new widgets.  They report on things like, latest forums posts, latest blog entries and suchlike. Let's see if this gets a mention in the main feed...

As I test more areas of the site I'm finding heaps more bugs all the time.  The list is really growing and we can't migrate from the old site till all of these problems have been sorted out. I think I'll have to ask some of the other girls to help us debug too.  I can't do it all on my own.  Karen Brad has been very helpful but we need  several people here to check things over. Karen has already uploaded some great videos.  I think this will be a great feature.  We need many more great features that work properly though, before we can even think about closing the old site. The new site has to be ten times better that what went before.  Although I'm itching to move, I will wait until this new site is perfect before it's unveiled. Just an aside that has nothing to do with the above... It's interesting to note that while both the chat rooms and IM have integral spell checking, the blogs composition page does not.  You can however, write your blog using Microsoft Word, Spellcheck there and then paste your entry into the composition box. I'm going to try that now.

I'm sooo pleased.  I've been working on this site for about six months and at times it seemed like it would never happen but tonight I have managed to install nine of our core modules which are forums, blogs, galleries, chat, clasifieds, polls, groups, events and videos. That's all the stuff you're maybe used to from our old site but we have a lot of new stuff too, that you've never seen before.  It's 11pm now and I'm tired.  I've been working on this since about 8.30am but I'm looking really forward to getting back online and working on configuring these nine modules tomorrow morning. Then we have to install a myriad of other features and stuff and then try to populate it with good content and test, test, test it. I do not want to release this new site until I am absolutely sure it all works properly and that it's completely wonderful.  So far it's looking pretty good! I'll check in with an update again soon. Hugs, Katie   x
