Reaction to MTS episode 2

I have finally been able to watch the second episode of My Transsexual Summer. It is compulsive viewing for people like us, primarily I suppose because we are able to see ourselves in each of the people in it. I thought I would put down a few of my own thoughts, although much has already been said by others. I was suprised by how much strength they gained just from being in each others' company for a weekend. I wasn't sure what to expect, maybe a make-up fest and a lot of chiffon, but the fact that it deals with the issues of them going out together in public, and applying for jobs, and breaking the news to their parents was refreshing I thought. It shows that if the public are faced with us in a way that they can ask questions then they can understand and come to terms with us, but also that we need each other to be there when this happens. We are not alone, but it feels like it most of the time.

I felt that the interview that Dawn (?) went to at the bridal shop was unfair. The owners of the shop must have been aware (one of them claimed not to be) since there were cameras filming. What reason were they given for this? The other owner was rude - "you can always tell by the adams apple" - I was disappointed that this rudeness was not highlighted further. In my view if the owner knew she was a transsexual and that this would be an issue then dont interview - it is not acceptable to interview and then be rude to an applicant.

I am not sure what the legal position is, but if shops are allowed to use being transgendered as a reason for not being given a job then we dont have the equal rights system that we believe we have.

Anyway, a lot of issus raised by the show - looking forward to the next episode.
