Exactly when does the future become the present and the present become the past?

I started this year with no doubt at all, that the family business I have run for 14 years figured not in my future, but only in my present and past.

Although I have worked in the business for 14 years, I realised I had made a big mistake after about 6 months, because of my brothers binge drinking. Earlier this year, after yet another run in with him one Monday morning, with him still drunk from a weekend of very heavy drinking, and a few hours short of the drunkenness giving way to a monster hangover, he picked another fight with me. I vowed then that this would be the year that I finally found a new job and got out. I have still to find a new job, but I am finally out of the family business because I could stand it no more.

Friday was my last day, and after yet another argument with my drunken brother, I left the factory not with kind words of praise and gratitude for all the years of service ringing in my ears! No, sadly I left the factory on Friday with only one thought.

    "THANK GOD THATS OVER"

    and then,

"Thank God I don't have to put up with that little shit anymore."

Finally the family business exists not in my future, or even my present. Now it only exists in my past, and what a huge relief it is to know that. Even though its Monday now, I'm still fuming at him for deliberately starting another fight on my very last day in the factory.

What a sad state of affairs it is when unemployment holds better prospects than continuing to work for the family business.
