We had to change the name because the word ‘tranny’ became increasingly toxic and we had to change our rickety old software because the developers would no longer support it.
I vaguely remember we had asked the existing members to come up with a new name and Gender Society won. I think a lot of our members at the time wanted us to distance our community from the other cattle market sites out there so we needed to sound more respectable.Trannyweb was a busy and vibrant community though (started in 1999) with lots of people online at any one time. The forums were the jewel in the crown as you can see from the huge number of threads and forum posts (which by the way, are still available today).
The transition to The Gender Society took place in 2011. Unfortunately, a lot of the long-time regulars who used to be permanently logged in, didn’t like the change... less

Gender variant (trans or transgender) people are relatively rarely seen in GP surgeries. Many GPs say that they lack the knowledge to treat those experiencinggender variant conditions and, consequently, they are not confident to do so.The first part of this publication provides an overview of care for trans people that is particularly applicable to GPs. Hormone therapy is central to transgender primarycare, and issues such as assessment and diagnosis are also relevant to general practice. These topics are discussed in greater detail in Annexes C and D. Clinical care for gender variant people should be provided within a framework of good practice that emphasises patient autonomy, allows for the wide variety of needs among trans people and is flexible in its clinical responses to those needs. It should also take account... less

I just wished you were in the states to give such accurate content, but then under this current administration and political conflict I think you might find it quite egregious,
There was a time in the states when we were moving in a very positive direction, sadly we have faltered and at best stagnated our trans direction.

When Trannyweb became the Gender society I gathered a few people to become site moderators lovely helpful team, keeping the site clear of trolls, keeping the home page clear of sleaze and wiping out literally 1000's of spams. Shame that when I stepped back from heading up that team due to studying and work I was unable to devote as much attention as the site needed many of the site and forum mods just seemed to vanish, lose interest. I will always remember some advice Katie gave mewhen in the early days of being a mod, I was verbally abused, it upset me and I threatened to leave,Katie said if someone on your land line gives you grief, do you cut your phone off. The longer after puberty hormone therapy is started, the less effective it is--but not a linear scale, e.g., results are considerably more dramatic in an 18 year old than a 28 year old, but results are not on the average dramatically different between a 38 year old and a 48 year old.
The following effects have been observed in varying degrees--anywhere from little to moderate--with extended treatment. With effective and continuous dosages, most of the changes that a particular body is genetically prone to start within 2 to 4 months, will start leveling off somewhat within 2 years, and be mostly done within 5 years. The leveling may take longer if the testes are not removed. High levels of estrogen will cause faster development up to a point, but not better results in the long term than moderate levels of estrogen..
Fertility decreases. Sperm count drops rapidly. Sometimes it returns to almost normal if hormonal treatment is... less

No more problems at the passport checkpoints. I am just one of the ladies on board...and have FUN. I was never before called so often "miss" as now on board. It made me laugh innerly thinking that this miss is the father of two grown up children....

I listed my transitioning phases at job as following:
1) Hippie or androgyne with a male name
2) Coming outs at work
3) Feminine androgyne, slight make up, bra, still with male name
4) Openly feminine, with a female name
The most difficult phase was 3, because you feel you must somehow explain your looks to strangers. Of course not to your working mates who know already. In phase 4 no need to explain anything any more, even though people may still give longer looks or have thoughts about your voice.

Too much thinking about what others think about you gets paranoid. Some small things then cheer you up. This morning I felt not especially pretty as I stood side by side with a guy entering the bus. He stayed back in order to let me enter first. And he would not have done that to a tranny. Or another man. Suddenly I felt pretty.

Then I must guide some visitors from another city around. Some people in both of these groups remember me as male. If needed, I will just say "May he rest in peace". Then I meet my ex-wife at the attorney´s office in order to subdivide our property. And the day ends with a special girls´ night out with my daughter, and two former neighbour girls who WANT to see me . Quite a day, isn´t it?

I made a daytrip from Helsinki to Tallinn on saturday. Just to test my new passport...and to have a dinner with my estonian friend Liisa in Tallinn. No problems at the checkpoints, of course not, because there was my pic and my name Laura in the passport. On my way back across the Gulf of Finland I sat down in the dancing restaurant. Must have passed okay, because guys came to me and wanted to have a dance with me. And I didn´t refuse .

I entered there first, introduced myself to the chairman and we sat down for a three minutes silence for the spanish victims of terrorism. Then entered my ex-wife´s lawyer, a woman, who figured out I must be representing the ex-husband. A bit later she said to me she took me first for the husband´s possible new girlfriend. I had a good laugh. My ex-wife´s lawyer had to leave one hour before the end of the meeting. So I sat down with the chairman and we finished the protocol together. I helped him in some spelling problems and he kept on saying " Laura, good that you are in no hurry".

In hurry for my bus (30 minutes to wait for the next one) I came to the bus station platform and faced a guard guy from the dept.store. The most stupid scenario for a ts-woman. He asked what I had in my bag. I showed him...look food, only food. He said he would go and get a scanner to find out what caused the alarm. But he was very polite, he said I could get my bus if it came in before him. And it did. So, I never found out what that was all about.
I paid $45/week for professional treatment and it took about four months. Rates for voice therapists could vary quite a bit; I don't know how typical this is.

Then there was a man who wanted to invite me for a dinner. I didn´t like the guy and tried politely to say no thanks. But he insisted...until I told him I am a TS. That worked .
Hehe...you could use this trick even if you weren´t a TS.

I was yesterday in a seminar meeting, almost everybody was new to each other. We had a small introduction round, I said I´m Laura T. from the city planning. Nobody gave me a second look. So, for them I was only the tall girl from the planning office.
Well...I must get used to this. That people take me simply as I am. A wonderful feeling anyway, no need to explain anything.

A woman started to talk to me yesterday in the street, as if she knew me. I just smiled at her and passed. Then she yelled after me things as "Don´t pretend, I know you, you bloody whore". I passed as a woman all right, but obviously looked a lot like somebody else...who had maybe taken away that poor woman´s husband or something....

Last saturday I was sitting with three genetic women in a cafe and three other girls were supposed to join us. The problem was that we knew each other only through internet. So the newcomers were told that among us four there is one ts, hoping that that would help them to find us. Well, that didn´t help... The three new girls sat down at another table in the cafe and couldn´t figure us out. They joined us only after one of us went to their table to ask who they were. And I remember passing them twice when walking to the desk and back for my espresso. I must laugh...actually I must pass pretty well .
