We had to change the name because the word ‘tranny’ became increasingly toxic and we had to change our rickety old software because the developers would no longer support it.
I vaguely remember we had asked the existing members to come up with a new name and Gender Society won. I think a lot of our members at the time wanted us to distance our community from the other cattle market sites out there so we needed to sound more respectable.Trannyweb was a busy and vibrant community though (started in 1999) with lots of people online at any one time. The forums were the jewel in the crown as you can see from the huge number of threads and forum posts (which by the way, are still available today).
The transition to The Gender Society took place in 2011. Unfortunately, a lot of the long-time regulars who used to be permanently logged in, didn’t like the change... less

Gender variant (trans or transgender) people are relatively rarely seen in GP surgeries. Many GPs say that they lack the knowledge to treat those experiencinggender variant conditions and, consequently, they are not confident to do so.The first part of this publication provides an overview of care for trans people that is particularly applicable to GPs. Hormone therapy is central to transgender primarycare, and issues such as assessment and diagnosis are also relevant to general practice. These topics are discussed in greater detail in Annexes C and D. Clinical care for gender variant people should be provided within a framework of good practice that emphasises patient autonomy, allows for the wide variety of needs among trans people and is flexible in its clinical responses to those needs. It should also take account... less

I just wished you were in the states to give such accurate content, but then under this current administration and political conflict I think you might find it quite egregious,
There was a time in the states when we were moving in a very positive direction, sadly we have faltered and at best stagnated our trans direction.

When Trannyweb became the Gender society I gathered a few people to become site moderators lovely helpful team, keeping the site clear of trolls, keeping the home page clear of sleaze and wiping out literally 1000's of spams. Shame that when I stepped back from heading up that team due to studying and work I was unable to devote as much attention as the site needed many of the site and forum mods just seemed to vanish, lose interest. I will always remember some advice Katie gave mewhen in the early days of being a mod, I was verbally abused, it upset me and I threatened to leave,Katie said if someone on your land line gives you grief, do you cut your phone off. I had joined a couple of "straight" dating sites where the only option for gender was the binary "M" or "F". I'd check "F" but in my profile mention that I was a special girl with a little something different down below. I left it at that as far as being a trans woman while creating an interesting profile designed to attract an inteligent, well rounded, but open minded person.
I was very surprised at the number of men who reached out to me that actually understood just who I was and stated that they were very interested in learning more about me and wished to meet up, a typical response in a binary world. In further communication, quite a few expressed that they were totally fine with dating a passable trans woman while some fit into that "admirer" or even "chaser" mode as described in the thread earlier. Throughout our communication, I make it clear that I'm not your typical girl but do not say I'm trans unless they bring it... less

Their leaders must be in real trouble to risk twisting John Bull's nose to get support of the radicals. Especially with Bush Jr. already in the area and chomping at the bit. Is everybody insane?

My encounters with Jar-heads over the years has been mixed. I encountered a group of young men and women recently and they were most hospitable and friendly. I had the impression that these young Marines would take everyone at face value.....how come the upper echelon can't do the same?

It should be and, just maybe it could be.
I know that as a pressure group it is a difficult situation - we do need protection in so many areas even though so many of us do not want to be transsexuals.
BUT !!!!
It was on March 9th that the very first legal 'sex change' operation took place - after which nothing was ever the same again. Surely this date would be an ideal one on which to forward awareness of our needs.

There are no political figures who are openly TG. In fact there are very few people in the public eye generally who are TG - Claire Perry and Eddie Izzard are the only two I can think of.
I mean organisations that are TG-focused, not those who speak for a wider range of people including TGs. For example the Lesbian & Gay Christian Movement (LGCM). As its title suggests, this organisation campaigns on behalf of lesbian and gay Christians. I had an email exchange with its secretary, the Rev Richard Kirker, in which he assured me that it was supportive of bi and trans people as well. But there is nothing at all in its mission statement or any of its literature to show that.
What political interest I have seen is in the transsexual aspect. For example whether TG people (such as April Ashley) should be allowed to change their birth certificates to record their female... less

"Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity."

"Buried deep in the new law is Sec. 113, an innocuously titled bit called "Preventing Cyberstalking." It rewrites existing telephone harassment law to prohibit anyone from using the Internet "without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy."
"Think about it: A woman fired by a manager who demanded sexual favors wants to blog about it without divulging her full name. An aspiring pundit hopes to set up the next Suck.com. A frustrated citizen wants to send e-mail describing corruption in local government without worrying about reprisals.
In each of those three cases, someone's probably going to be annoyed. That's enough to make the action... less

I understand that she is quite a divisive figure in America at least in the Republican dominated media. How divisive a figure she is to the American people it will be interesting to find out. This may prevent her from getting the nomination though she won her Senate seat in New York comfortably on both occassions despite all the money the Republicans spent opposing her. The other Democratic front runner is Barack Obama and the question this obviously poses is white middle America ready to elect a black man? He's a bit of a political superstar at the moment but then the negative campaigning has only just begun. Haven't they just suggested that he spent some of his childhood being educated in a Madrassa. I do remember, however, Jesse Jackson making quite a strong bid for the nomination before he made some crass remark about hymie-town. So my moneys going on John Edwards. I do remember predicting Bill Clinton would win when no... less

But then I decided to start a new thread anyway.
Please be aware that these are just my opinions.
All Oregon races, measures, etc.--too much mudslinging, fearmongering, etc. It got old quickly, and with the Republicans leading the mudslinging, it didn't take warp engine technology to predict the results of this somewhat liberal state.
Specifics:
Governor: Ted Kulongoski came down into his reception area to the sounds of The Rolling Stones "Start Me Up." That should be a clue--he'd better start something up. He has been strangely quiet the last few years. He needs to get active.
Oregon 4th Congressional District: Peter DeFazio. A good man, who's been good for Oregon. I'm glad to see him re-elected, though he will have to continue his hard work...he only won by a nearly 2-1 margin (63% to 36%).
Measure 42 (Restricts insurance companies from... less

It was necessary to send a message to the Republicans about Iraq and allowing the Oil Companies raping the Public with their profit taking. Still, It was like choosing to be shot to death instead of burned at the stake. I'm not thrilled but I was out of BBQ sauce. Normally I vote Libertarian.
I"m very disappointed to see that big-mouthed bigot Arnold "The Governator" Schwartznegger re-elected, and by such a large vote. His comments about nurses lost me and his other bigoted comments, such as "girly-men" have driven me further away. I fear he will be a US Senator next.
A lot of bad ideas passed, but a few have really disappointed me:
83 - Sex Offenders - passed. It may well be a badly written proposition that will backfire. It has in other states. However, I voted for it because I figured it deserved a chance. A major arguement, against, was that it could keep convicted... less

I live in central Texas and there appears to be a plethera of churches. I've always wondered how the communities can support so many churches....recently there was an article in the paper about a small community(population) which is trying to figure out how to discourage new churches from moving in. Since church property is tax free, this town can't provide all of the services larger communities have. The residents of the town don't want their property tax raised and many are moving away for fear of having to pay more taxes...
'tis a mess. Should a community have the right to restrict church property? less

OPEC says there isn't any lack of oil but the multinational market in NYC is still raising the price of crude. Over the weekend BP shut down an operation in Alaska...over some bad plumbing. I call a plumber whenever there is a problem ...guess that's not how BP operates. I was working for a trucking company back in the 70s and the company hauled some of that pipe. If my memory is correct I recall that the Prudo Bay field was only supposed to last for 25 years. I believe BP is just giving the corporation another excuse to raise the price of fuel and make more profit. And another thorn stuck in my craw is the sobbing over the tax cut which didn't pass the US congress. The news media didn't bother to state that corporations would have benefited the most from another tax cut. The only reason it didn't get throught congress is because there is an election coming up in November....they want to look good.

So why would some politicians be any different? If I recall correctly, many years back, a member of the British Parliament was caught wearing stockings and garters while in the company of his mistress. And rumour has it, a late Prime Minister in Canada used to wear dresses while talking to spirits. In Toronto, we have a TG running for Mayor at every election. And with gay politicians now a norm in government, why shouldn't a tranny also have the privilege of serving her constituents if they so choose to elect her. Think of it! It would be a boon to our wish of tolerable acceptance in society!
And hey, Robyn? Not only Thatcher, but methinks Camilla Parker Bowles too! LOL
