We had to change the name because the word ‘tranny’ became increasingly toxic and we had to change our rickety old software because the developers would no longer support it.
I vaguely remember we had asked the existing members to come up with a new name and Gender Society won. I think a lot of our members at the time wanted us to distance our community from the other cattle market sites out there so we needed to sound more respectable.Trannyweb was a busy and vibrant community though (started in 1999) with lots of people online at any one time. The forums were the jewel in the crown as you can see from the huge number of threads and forum posts (which by the way, are still available today).
The transition to The Gender Society took place in 2011. Unfortunately, a lot of the long-time regulars who used to be permanently logged in, didn’t like the change... less

Gender variant (trans or transgender) people are relatively rarely seen in GP surgeries. Many GPs say that they lack the knowledge to treat those experiencinggender variant conditions and, consequently, they are not confident to do so.The first part of this publication provides an overview of care for trans people that is particularly applicable to GPs. Hormone therapy is central to transgender primarycare, and issues such as assessment and diagnosis are also relevant to general practice. These topics are discussed in greater detail in Annexes C and D. Clinical care for gender variant people should be provided within a framework of good practice that emphasises patient autonomy, allows for the wide variety of needs among trans people and is flexible in its clinical responses to those needs. It should also take account... less

I just wished you were in the states to give such accurate content, but then under this current administration and political conflict I think you might find it quite egregious,
There was a time in the states when we were moving in a very positive direction, sadly we have faltered and at best stagnated our trans direction.

When Trannyweb became the Gender society I gathered a few people to become site moderators lovely helpful team, keeping the site clear of trolls, keeping the home page clear of sleaze and wiping out literally 1000's of spams. Shame that when I stepped back from heading up that team due to studying and work I was unable to devote as much attention as the site needed many of the site and forum mods just seemed to vanish, lose interest. I will always remember some advice Katie gave mewhen in the early days of being a mod, I was verbally abused, it upset me and I threatened to leave,Katie said if someone on your land line gives you grief, do you cut your phone off. I had joined a couple of "straight" dating sites where the only option for gender was the binary "M" or "F". I'd check "F" but in my profile mention that I was a special girl with a little something different down below. I left it at that as far as being a trans woman while creating an interesting profile designed to attract an inteligent, well rounded, but open minded person.
I was very surprised at the number of men who reached out to me that actually understood just who I was and stated that they were very interested in learning more about me and wished to meet up, a typical response in a binary world. In further communication, quite a few expressed that they were totally fine with dating a passable trans woman while some fit into that "admirer" or even "chaser" mode as described in the thread earlier. Throughout our communication, I make it clear that I'm not your typical girl but do not say I'm trans unless they bring it... less

Why are gay and tv/ts characters nearly always played by straight actors? The examples are obvious ones so I won't detail them here. But it does seem that the more overtly straight and masculine the actor is the more likely he is to be cast in a gay or transgender role. Just in case anyone may be uncertain as to the movies intentions. Indeed, even in TransAmerica the transsexual character was played by a biologically born female. Is this done out of fear, is it so that regardless of the story they are telling or where there sympathies may lay, they can in some way distance themselves from it, or is it so they can still continue to ridicule and laugh at the community they are producing a representation of? Or does it, as the movies so often do, accurately reflect societies attitude. Transgenderism and homosexuality in all its forms may be more open... less

Do any of you remember an early Brian DePalma film from 1974 called "Phantom of the Paradise?" It is a rock version of "Phantom of the Opera," with a little "Faust" and "Picture of Dorian Gray" thrown in. The film stars Paul Williams, who also wrote the score. It was a bit groundbreaking in many ways, including the death metal scene (although Alice Cooper was doing something like that already). It has some camp moments, but overall a lot of fun, yet very sad, very poignant, and, at times, sarcastic and a great statement on perceptions.
The song "Special to Me" came to mind last week because Josie and Lilienne were concerned over my change in behavior due to a number of reasons (I'm fine now!), and I remember the lyrics to that song had some significance.
So, who remembers this movie? And, from what I... less

On the cover was a picture of Cary Grant and the lead actress ( whose name rather embarrassingly escapes me ) a work colleague looked at it and remarked that Cary Grant was a good looking woman. I replied that Cary Grant was in fact the actor to which he replied he'd never heard of him and anyway he wouldn't watch it because it was in black and white. I was both startled and appalled at such ignorance. He was, after all, twenty five so hardly a kid. But I did think what the younger generation has missed out on. I was raised watching old movies, from saturday morning pictures and the saturday night classic movie, the late night Hammer Horrors and the sunday afternoon westerns. Movies that had to tell a story in the round, that didn't have the technology to waste forty minutes on special effects, that were tightly scripted with sparkling dialogue, that were reliant upon great acting from people who'd had often tough lives before ever entering... less

I guess if you are into torture this is for you.
But the ORIGINAL "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is on, not that crappy remake (which stole its ending from "Blair Witch Project," which in itself was inspired by "Cannibal Holocaust"). What made the first "Texas" film so electrifying when it came out was NOT blood and guts, but the implication of what was happenning.
So, I turn your attention away from the current bickering to what horror films still give you the creeps. These are just a few films that still give me the willies:
The Exorcist
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Blair Witch Project
Cannibal Holocaust
Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead (ORIGINAL versions)
Again, there are others. This is a partial list. I have not addressed the classics. As a kid I saw a LOT of the Lon Chaney silents, like "The Monster," "The Unholy Three," and "He Who Gets... less

I really do not give a crap about the Academy Awards, but I am proposing a contest concerning the following categories:
Best Film
Best Actor/Actress
Best Supporting Actor/Actress
Best Director
Best Original/Adapted Screenplay
While the other categories are actually very much important, like in music, my figuring out the balance of points here will be easier.
Then again, if there are any suggestions as to additional categories, I am all open.
Let's have some fun with this.
Once I know the level of participation, I can offer actual prizes.

Basically it's a straight 1950s Film Noir - down to plot, language, characters etc, but set in a modern American High School. So long as you go along with it, it is immensely watchable. I'm not sure it entirely works and you have to suspend disbelief, but if you do then the film is very rewarding.
