We had to change the name because the word ‘tranny’ became increasingly toxic and we had to change our rickety old software because the developers would no longer support it.
I vaguely remember we had asked the existing members to come up with a new name and Gender Society won. I think a lot of our members at the time wanted us to distance our community from the other cattle market sites out there so we needed to sound more respectable.Trannyweb was a busy and vibrant community though (started in 1999) with lots of people online at any one time. The forums were the jewel in the crown as you can see from the huge number of threads and forum posts (which by the way, are still available today).
The transition to The Gender Society took place in 2011. Unfortunately, a lot of the long-time regulars who used to be permanently logged in, didn’t like the change... less

Gender variant (trans or transgender) people are relatively rarely seen in GP surgeries. Many GPs say that they lack the knowledge to treat those experiencinggender variant conditions and, consequently, they are not confident to do so.The first part of this publication provides an overview of care for trans people that is particularly applicable to GPs. Hormone therapy is central to transgender primarycare, and issues such as assessment and diagnosis are also relevant to general practice. These topics are discussed in greater detail in Annexes C and D. Clinical care for gender variant people should be provided within a framework of good practice that emphasises patient autonomy, allows for the wide variety of needs among trans people and is flexible in its clinical responses to those needs. It should also take account... less

I just wished you were in the states to give such accurate content, but then under this current administration and political conflict I think you might find it quite egregious,
There was a time in the states when we were moving in a very positive direction, sadly we have faltered and at best stagnated our trans direction.

When Trannyweb became the Gender society I gathered a few people to become site moderators lovely helpful team, keeping the site clear of trolls, keeping the home page clear of sleaze and wiping out literally 1000's of spams. Shame that when I stepped back from heading up that team due to studying and work I was unable to devote as much attention as the site needed many of the site and forum mods just seemed to vanish, lose interest. I will always remember some advice Katie gave mewhen in the early days of being a mod, I was verbally abused, it upset me and I threatened to leave,Katie said if someone on your land line gives you grief, do you cut your phone off. The longer after puberty hormone therapy is started, the less effective it is--but not a linear scale, e.g., results are considerably more dramatic in an 18 year old than a 28 year old, but results are not on the average dramatically different between a 38 year old and a 48 year old.
The following effects have been observed in varying degrees--anywhere from little to moderate--with extended treatment. With effective and continuous dosages, most of the changes that a particular body is genetically prone to start within 2 to 4 months, will start leveling off somewhat within 2 years, and be mostly done within 5 years. The leveling may take longer if the testes are not removed. High levels of estrogen will cause faster development up to a point, but not better results in the long term than moderate levels of estrogen..
Fertility decreases. Sperm count drops rapidly. Sometimes it returns to almost normal if hormonal treatment is... less

Anyway, CD/TG persons can now use any restroom, changing room, etc., that they "identify with through preferred gender or appearance..." in a nutshell. Also, law also protects CD/TG from job discrimination. Yay! I've been limiting my outings because I thought I needed a "note" frm an MD stating I am in treatment....Road trip!

Those of you familiar with the history of this subject will bequick to notice that the subtitle refers to Dr. Harry Benjamin’s ground breaking work,The Transsexual Phenomenon1, published in 1966. Prior to its publication, very littlehad been entered into the medical literature about the subject2,3,4,5,6. The few worksthat were published tended to be about cross dressing (transvestism) in men and gavethe impression that the “disorder” was one of perverse sexuality. Benjamin, on the otherhand, was one of the first to think in terms of “sex” being the physical manifestation ofthe body while “gender” and gender expression as being a totally different aspect of whatit means to be human. Further more, he writes that he believed that gender wasindelibly imprinted on the brain either in utero or shortly after birth. Instead of seeinghis patients as being delusional and suffering from a sexual perversion, he saw hispatients as suffering... less

The next day, The Eagle, AU's student newspaper, featured a column from the outgoing president titled ''The Real Me.''
''For my entire life, I've wrestled with my gender identity,'' McBride wrote in part. ''It was only after the experiences of this year I was able to come to terms with what had been my deepest secret: I'm transgender.''
With that, Sarah Elizabeth McBride came out as a transgender woman about as publicly as possible. The reception she's gotten from her AU community has been, in a word, ''overwhelming.'' In a good way.

The judge said that because one person is male and the other legally transitioned to female, the couple qualifies as legally married under the state’s Defense of Marriage Act.
The case hinged on the marriage of Christine and Calvin Radtke. The two were married in July 2005 in Goodhue County in southeastern Minnesota. Calvin works for United Parcel Service and enrolled himself and his wife in his union’s health plan. Christine had legally transitioned from male to female several years earlier.
But after Christine’s physician mentioned her transgender status in her medical file in 2008, the union’s health plan terminated her coverage.

In this story the mayor and some other officials say they are trying to make this a hate crime, which they should be commended for. However, the fact that the story is about two gay men, and one transwoman being attacked, and only the gay men's attacks are classified as hate crimes makes it so blatent that something is very wrong with the ways the laws are written. I can't understand how any, and all crimes that are committed against a person because of who they are, be it race, religion, orientation, or gender identity should not be consisdered a hate crime.

After being misgendered* in class by my teacher earlier that morning, I had already spent a good five minutes hiding out and crying silent tears in a bathroom that most folks on campus would wrongly think I shouldn’t have access to. This day was headed for disaster from the start.
Some people might make the false claim that Harper is a safe space for all – that there is no bullying or prejudice, and that all are welcome.
As a transgender* persyn – more specifically, a genderqueer*, primarily butch* transwomyn – I live in a world that is inherently unsafe, uninviting, and unfortunately cruel if you do not conform to the rigid expectations of the gender binary*. It is not my responsibility to make sure that you are not a bigot, but I will give you a piece of my mind if you’re acting like one.
But I digress. This is my story.

Buffalo— A growing number of scholarships are devoted exclusively to students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender(lgbt). Some scholarships are available nationally, and other scholarships are exclusively devoted to students from specific geographic regions. These populations have become much more visible within higher education, but still face formidable social challenges. Scholarships reflect the trend in diversity: encourage students of all backgrounds to participate to their highest potential.
Two local lgbt organizations currently are offering scholarships to local lgbt students who are furthering their education after high school.
Gay & Lesbian Youth Services of Western New York (GLYS) has three different scholarship programs that are available.

"Dyke."
Pretending not to hear, Brittany would walk briskly to her locker, past the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders who loitered in menacing packs.
"Whore."
Like many 13-year-olds, Brittany knew seventh grade was a living hell. But what she didn't know was that she was caught in the crossfire of a culture war being waged by local evangelicals inspired by their high-profile congressional representative Michele Bachmann, who graduated from Anoka High School and, until recently, was a member of one of the most conservative churches in the area. When Christian activists who considered gays an abomination forced a measure through the school board forbidding the discussion of homosexuality in the district's public schools, kids like Brittany were unknowingly thrust into the heart of a clash that was about to become intertwined... less
