Proposed new rule to bar trans health care exclusions

  • Dear Friend,

Amazing news! We are now one huge step closer on the path toward nationwide coverage of transition-related care.

Today, the Obama Administration announced proposed rules implementing the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"). This provision bars discrimination in health facilities and most insurance plans. These new proposed rules would make it illegal to categorically deny health care coverage related to gender transition in most private insurance plans, as well by state Medicaid programs, Medicare, Children’s Health Insurance Programs, and in the Indian Health Service.

Though it may be months before the rule is finalized, when it is, it will be one of the biggest victories for transgender people ever.

Learn more details about the proposed federal rule here.

In the coming days, we will put out more information about what the rule would mean and let you know what you can do to ensure the proposed rule becomes a final rule.

This amazing news is the culmination of years of advocacy by the National Center for Transgender Equality. Since the law’s passage in 2010, we have pressed the federal government to use its authority to make clear that all types of discrimination against transgender people by health care providers and insurance companies should be deemed illegal.

We all know how life-saving this care is. Everyone in our community deserves full access to health care to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives. This proposed rule is a huge step towards that goal, and NCTE will continue to fight until ALL of us have the health care we deserve.

    Sincerely,
    Mara Keisling

  • Let's hope this pans out nationwide. If it's anything like Obama Care and the way states can bypass and obstruct the federal laws we may see a very uneven coverage for people. Still it is big news and a definite step in the right direction. I'm struggling to get hormones these days consistantly due to cost factors which is not good and could really use this as protection. Thanks for sharing this Emma. It is encouraging to see.
