Is it normal to be depressed after cosmetic surgery? I feel my face is all wrong. The plastic surgeon told me that I had real problem with my looks and and should have more surgeries. This is too much for me to bear. I am really depressed of my appearance after the surgery. As I had a bad experience with this plastic surgery, I am very anxious and scared about any further surgery. My friend says I suffer from phobia disorder and that needs to be treated. I browsed for good phobia disorders treatment centres and found a one nearby in Toronto (Link removed). Do I really need such a treatment?

First thing to say is that reactions vary from the wildly enthusiastic to the "Oh my God, I'm awful!" Usually the truth is somewhere in the middle.  I rather suspect that if your surgeon is saying that yoe need more surgery, effectively he is saying "I screwed up."  Don't go there, yet.  See him or her and tell the surgeon why you are so unhappy with the result, and, with your before and after photos (which I assume you have) get a second opinion on the results.

As for CBT - and your friend's diagnosis - CBT is a good idea.  However, don't immediately go along with your friend's diagnosis.  Let the professional do the diagnosing.

Meantime, take care, and if you want to, pm me.

    Best,

    Amanda.

Fitstly one must be practical, not knowing what procedures  you had, I would need to see before and after photo;s, male to female surgery especially to the face can involve major surgery, I have seen programes where the forhead has been removed and reshaped and screwed back on, jaw bones reshaped.   Were you expecting too much for what was explained to you? were the surgeons reputable.   I had my jaw broken when I was very young, ny face was a bit lop sided and I had realy bad over bite.    I had corrective surgery, later on in my life, a bit of reshapeing, was quite happy with the outcome, was another niggling little problem out of the way.   What I am tryng to acertain is if you went in for a nose job, it's not going to change your jaw line.    Depression in my experience has more than one contributing thing, and one must sort out each little thing, one at a time.   Are you attending a gender clinic, getting support and advice? they usually recommend procedures, specialist reputable surgeons if you discuss it with them.   Your gender councellor should be involved if your feeling depressed.
