  • **WE NEED YOUR HELP!!**
ON THURSDAY, MAY 3rd THE US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES IS SCHEDULED TO VOTE ON THE LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT HATE CRIMES PREVENTION ACT – ONE OF HRC’S TOP LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES.
Opponents of the hate crimes bill are flooding Congress with emails and phone calls. We need to urge those on Capitol Hill to vote "yes" on this important bill!

    HOW CAN YOU HELP?
VISIT WWW.HRC.ORG/FIGHTHATE TO TAKE ACTION ON HATE CRIMES, AND CALL THE CAPITOL SWITCHBOARD AT 202-224-3121 AND TELL THEM TO VOTE “YES” ON THE HATE CRIMES BILL
The far right has mobilized on this in the last week and sources say some members of congress are wavering because of the onslaught. Right-wing extremists are escalating their rhetoric to stop this common-sense hate crimes bill. To counter their lies, HRC has released a new video debunking the myths and telling the real truth about the bill. To view the video, please visit our homepage at www.hrc.org.

Thank you for writing the Human Rights Campaign with your question or concern.

We always appreciate hearing from our members, supporters and the general public, and will always try to respond to inquiries as quickly and efficiently as possible. However, HRC receives a high volume of correspondences daily, and because of this high volume it may take time to personally respond to every message. But please know that your question or concern will be properly processed and you will receive a response as soon as possible if a response is required. Also please note that sometimes it takes longer to address a concern if that concern requires further research. We appreciate your patience in this instance.

  • Good news, but don't let the momentum stop here lets keep going and move on to a victory.

    Love Sara

    Hi Sara,

Today is a day I will never forget. In a hard-won victory, the House of Representatives just voted to pass the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

That's right - WE WON IN THE HOUSE, thanks in part to Judy Shepard, who joined me in a last-minute personal visit to Congress this morning. Now action moves to the Senate.

I wanted to pass on a message I just received from our Legislative Director, Allison, who's at the Capitol right now - as you'll see from her note below, the battle isn't over. The radical right is terrified of this bill - their attacks have been ferocious, and this vote will only intensify them.

HRC is scrambling to pull out all the stops in the next few weeks to get this bill through the Senate. As Allison says below, we're in a "whatever it takes" moment. That means YOU are critical to our success.

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we blew past our $50,000 goal last week, raising a total of $75,000! In fact, the response of the radical right has been so strong that we need to set a NEW GOAL of $100,000 to fight their powerful lobby in the Senate. Don't let today's victory be in vain! Go to:

  • So right Sara. Despite the victory in Congress today, the White House has already announced intentions to veto this bill. As it goes to debate in the Senate, we need to keep the pressure up on our representatives there. Here is a link where you can write to your Senate representative to encourage passage of this bill:

Please don't procrastinate. Do this today!

  • Just a reminder. Please visit the link in my previous post, write to your Senate representatives and express your support for the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention bill, S 1105.

NCTE Lobby Day is coming up next Tuesday, May 15, when we will have the opportunity to discuss this bill and the drafting of trans inclusive anti discrimination legislation.

Also, as the 2008 presidential campaign gears up, find out where your candidates stand on these issues. Some candidates whom you would think most likely to support this kind of legislation might surprise you most unpleasantly.
