Just a hello from a reader of your books. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the second one.

    Lots of good info.

  • I think it must be the holidays, it has been a little quiet in the chatroom, but still fairly active in the forums.

  • I feel that also. Guess it must be the school holidays and that we've extinguished every topic of conversation known to woman. Either that, or we're too engrossed with those bumper size magazines that are published this time of year, showcasing next season's fashions. So you can choose your winter coat whilst on the beach..

  • Hi, I'm fairly new on this site and it does seem to be very quiet in this forum, especially considering the number of US members there are, according to the stats. Overall, I do enjoy the site...

Golly gee, I try to stir this forum up but I don't want to start a fire - like some.
I figure "let a sleeping dog lie" as my Mum used to say.
But then again that's not we're all about.
I guess the USA members are too busy to keep us up to date on their goings on.
    I sound defensive don't I?
    Sorry.
I understand as a mod I'm supposed to keep any threads on track - guess I'm doing a "fab" job.
    All's quiet

The only things I can think of are always contriversal - no clear answer - ie religion, politics or sexual preference so I steer clear of them. What's left?
    Food
    Weather
    Growing old
    - they're mundane (I like that word)
I love the FUN forum but I just don't know that many jokes.
I was burned once on the POLITICKS forum - plus it's a no brainer - just can't make the conservatives into flaming liberals(no offence Marsha Ann)
I know, I know- as members we outnumber the rest but I guess we're just shy -joke-
I'm very happy being the "shepardess" of this forum - still it's a shame it's so quiet.

  • Hi All,
I still don't know where I stand, because each political machine is adding their spin on the discussion on the US adopting a National Health plan. WHat I do know is that we don't have the money to fund it. So where are we going to get that money. Recent discussion included reducing Charitable Contributions for people over 200k in income. Ok except for the recipient of the services the charitable organization provides depends on those contributions. Moving money from your left pocket to your right pocket doesn't mean more money is created or made available. All for universal coverage, but I'm also for a better car, house, etc if I can afford it.

BTW: Would love to hear if the universal coverage will also cover transition counseling and SRS.

  • I'm with you Michelle, where is the money to pay for it, Obama doesn't seem to even be fazed by the cost. Even though many are not insured right now, emergency medical care is available for everyone right now and we struggle to pay for it, how are we going to give more coverage for less when the U.S. government does absolutely nothing efficiently. Shame on me, yes they do, they waste taxpayers money extremely efficiently.

  • What, you don't think Comrade Obama has our best interest in mind?

Money is a tool of the proletariat. That's why Comrade President is running our economy into the ground. He wants to redistribute the wealth.

He'll pass universal coverage, and then the hospitals will all be efficiently run...you know, like Medicare, the Post Office, and the VA.

I've got a little something he can redistribute...!

Meantime, pass this around and have a laugh. http://sendables.jibjab.c[...]k_obama

Go ahead pervert this nice quiet forum
Fact: The Communist Party of America has long been dead. It never was much of a political influence to begin with.
Fact: Most of the world have {so called} Universal Health Care coverage.
Fact: Name some institutions -political, religious or otherwise that doesn't have some faults.
Fact: Congress, the military and federal employees and veterans get health care coverage (yes there is a copay)

Well, I got that off my mind - now back to napping.

PS Let's not talk about money -FACT our monetary system is a house of cards and has been for some years.

  • HI MIna,

LOL!!!!!! Great link. Wonder if his side-lick is Biden or Pelosi????

As for Money, wish I could run my bank account like the government....

Write the check and ignore the bank balance..... opps there are laws against that...

    At least for us citizens.

Wonder why the govt doesn't have to obey them.

Also disturbed that because of my income, I can't qualify for any of this "Free Money" or at least our
    representatives believe it is free.

On a serious note - Does anyone know why the federal reserve is a private institution
and NOT part of the government?

Must have been napping the day they covered that in Civics class.

  • Marsha, I wonder if I am out of order here but my own country has been pilloried and calumnated in this Health debate;how many trillions have been thrown at the banks and at funding wars (in my country also) and how on earth could one delight in being 'Conservative' -surely as we are on the same band of the spectrum as Gays and Lesbians we cannot help but be 'Progressives'? I know we have had our differences but I take your views as being well meant,Marsha even though I am aghast at your conformism and even reactionary politics-hey wer'e just 'Blokes in frocks' after all!xxHugs'n stuff-Cheers,Nina Papillon.Vive La France!

  • Mary, hon--

    Pervert your nice quiet forum?

    **Maniacal laughter**

You betcha, sweetie! Isn't that my job?

Use of irony and sarcasm is bad in a forum, I suppose. It's hard to explain. However, I'll try to do so and hopefully won't irritate too many folks in the process.

We have a new form of Socialism coming--hence terms like Comrade Obama. In a true free market society, GM, Citi, AIG etc. all would have collapsed and the pieces picked up by private business, not propped up by fake bailouts that will cost your grandchildren. I do not believe in or support communism or socialism, personally believing them both to have failed.

I have Canadian and British friends and family who have all wondered why we want universal coverage, as it isn't working too well there. (Or maybe it works too well. Dunno.) BTW, Healthcare is some 17% of our GNP. Why do you think the feds even care otherwise? There's money there, and a new bureaucracy to build. Got friends in Massachusetts? Check with them, and see what they think. They are paying through the nose for statewide universal care. They are being taxed to death, luv!

Honey, we all have faults. That includes me, as exhibit "A." (Hey...does that make me an exhibitionist? ) Nobody, no organization, is perfect. That includes my president and my government.

You see, dear, I can pick on my government because I live here and voted in the last election. Therefore, I have the right to b*tch, just as I have done with every President since Nixon, when I was a little girl (and before I could vote). BTW, if you voted last round, you have that right too. Something about the right of free speech, at least for now. (The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers where I live, has not yet determined the Constitution to be unconstitutional.) And, if you didn't vote, you cannot complain.

Finally, hon, I am a Navy vet, and the child of a Navy vet, and have a long family line of Navy vets. (Except for one uncle, a bit of a black sheep. He went Army.) Don't talk to me about military healthcare; it's a joke and a shame. Our men and women of the US Armed Forces deserve better, and so do our vets. You should see what they make The Momma go through for a basic exam. This is a woman that for Daddy's 26 years of active duty and 7 years of reserve time took care of us kids and ran the house, essentially never knowing if she'd ever get her husband back, and if so what shape would he be in.

Yes, I'm opinionated. It's a good thing I'm American or I'd be in jail by now, I am sure.

Luv 'n hugs to you, my dear!

  • UK National health Service is $170Billlion for 61.5million population..do the arithmetic...and factor in all the excess charges of the US professionals and allow for soem very creative illegal activities...and a US National Health would cost $XXXTrillion...you cannot afford it...and as the US medcial professionals will not cut their charges you are stuck with what you have now...its a headache that Obambi talks about but hard to believe he'll ever get one started.
The trouble with a National Health system is that everyone thinks that everything should be covered..and no-one takes any care of their health. Over here 10% of NHS cash goes on obesity related problems but I think obesity is a person's own responsibility...the obese slobs say not...so who is right?
Plus of course there is such a backlog of untended health problems in USA that the $XXX trillions would disappear very quickly...and of course worldwide investors would skim off all the cash anyway...

    hmm...enough fro me

I hope you're not one of those bloody conservatives - I won't name them but they know who they are.
The problem here in the US is that the insurance companies have (almost all) gone incorporated. They pay their executive big bucks for requiring their minions to turn down all claims for coverage.
There was a cartoon in this mornings paper "I was turned down for insurance because of a pre-existing condition. I'm broke." This was just a cartoon but it speaks clearly. If you check into a hospital, go to a dentist, get eye glasses the first thing you are asked "Do you have insurance?"
Another factor - the doctors are charging more because their insurance coverage went up in price.
Something needs to be done to break this cycle.
True we can't afford it but we couldn't afford Bush's War either.
Now I'll climb off the soap box.

  • Hi Mary, I happen to be one of those conservatives and it amazes me how brainwashed so many people can be, especially those spewing the union line of b.s.

First off, most businesses are incorporated including small businesses with only three or four people. So get off your rocker that all corporations have overpaid execs. Next is they incorporate to protect themselves from the democrat leaching lawyers who suck money out of their own clients just as much as they go out to punish those evil corporations.

Then you have the big bucks the execs are paid. Often well deserved. How many jobs do poor people create? These people have proven talent to grow companies. I bet your retirement invests in corporations, you evil contributor! How hypocritical to denounce corporations, then demand your investments do well.

Next is the doctors, dentists and hospitals asking if you have insurance. Maybe that is something they might want to know, don't you think? Those in countries with national healthcare don't always get dental, nor are all medical procedures covered. And eyeglasses? I paid $69 for the exam and two pair earlier this year. I get it, you want the exotic ones and think someone else should pay for them.

Then you have the balls to say the Doctors raise their prices because their insurance went up, when in fact it went up to fight off your leaching lawyers.

And for those around the world including the ignorant in this country to think the uninsured go without health care, you are wrong. From personal experience both last week and today, my friend John who is basically broke spent several hours at the hospital having numerous tests run and again today at the medical center getting his arthritis checked out all without insurance or having to pay. Please don't give me a line about there are exceptions because you are darn right there are exceptions, just as many as there are uninsured!

    Hugs,
    Marsha

  • Mary G--

    **grins wickedly**

I am one of those "bloody conservatives"...old school, honey, not some Neocon. I believe in funding schools, National Parks, and (within reason) the military. I really believe in research and education, and that they should have enough funding to do what is needed.

I also believe that, since I have to live within a budget, so should my government. Social Security should be funded, and left alone and not tapped to balance the budget.

I'm letting Marsha rant a bit. (I did my part yesterday.) She's got some pretty firm views, some of which I agree with, and a few I don't as I do have a rather nasty liberal streak from time to time.

    **giggles**

Besides--all this has gotten the US forum noticed, and that was really what I was about. It was juuuuuuust a little too quiet in here...!

  • On the subject of whether or not doctor's make too much money I want those who believe that they do to ponder this situation: A baby at our church needed a heart transplant to live and on Saturday August 29, 2009 he received a donor heart which was successfully transplanted by a skilled surgeon. I don't care what anyone else thinks that surgery was worth, how much do you think the parents of that baby felt it was worth?

Current UK guidelines prohibit donor organs from being taken from children aged under two months but the heart which saved Sarah's life was donated from a child elsewhere in Europe where the rules are different.

  • I would also like to point out that the UK with their national health care lead the developed nations in breast cancer mortality. I'm glad I got my mammogram last month.

The only thing the U.S. leads in is lung cancer because of the number of smokers but worldwide that figure is going down.

  • Mary, I don't see any rabid people...I see sensible arguments.

yes..anyone can take a sopabox...perhaps a home made box or pair of mini stepladders now as I haven't seen a soap box for many years...into Hyde Park on a Sunday and stand and discourse or rant on any subject under the sun...I coud do it here in my northern town...the police have a duty to ensure I would not be harmed though they cannot stop me being heckled...

re Marshas glasses costs...US costs are so low! Our cheapest glasses chain charges double for basic styles and a full test. I got two years ago were about $200 but both pairs are bifocals...my boss ahs just had to get her daughter some very fashionable ones and they were $125 for one pair of just a single prescription lens...the daughter wanted an extra $75(!!!!) spending on them to have the lenses ground thinner so she didn't look geeky! LOL Who wants one of todays 15 years olds!.

My mother has had ten days in hospital afetr falling and getting the lung congestion that old folks are suceptible to...tteatment couldn't be better and while I was theer this afternoon a cleaner was wiping down all the touchabel surfaces in the placea nd she says they do a really good cleaning every day...so the infections that are mentioned in the press are mostly brought in on the dirty bodies of the typical patient as hygeine is very low on the agenda for many British.

The high rate of death from breast cancer is due to the women not taking any notice telly news items or info from their own doctors about checking their breasts regularly...

I have been constantly amazed when I go into any of the many clinics and hospitals I have had to use for various problems and esepcially all the things to do with my sex change to see juts how few of the other people waiting there take any notice of the many notices or leaflets on the walls or racks...it's as if no-one want to know anything about how to care for themselves...whether this same refusal to look at info is the same all over the world I don't know...do Amercians read any of the info while they are waiting to see the medics?

This blind refusal to learn anything about their own body or how to take care of themselves might be a natural thing worldwide or might have been fostered by both the nany state and the national health service.

I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of people in the country know nothing about ther bodies except the pour food and drink in the top and get 'processed' stuff out the other end...so long as the brain between their legs works they are happy...LOL...though in fact if their sex bits do stop working or have problems they are very reluctant to go to a medic and pull down their underwear...

    lol
