Epilators

  • Hi,

Has anyone had any experience, and/or got any advice about epilators, and their use. I've used a combination of hair removal cream and shaving thus far, and whilst it's been largely successful (and the latest Veet - sensitive skin version seems to have avoided any redness or soreness entirely), the time-to-having-to-do-it-again is quite low. I'm not impervious to pain, so a model that limits the agony would be useful though not essentially. How does it compare to waxing?

    TIA!

  • I have an epilator and like it. Like you, I drift from shaving to using a hair removal cream and then the occasional epilator. I have the Braun Silk Epil which seems to do a good job with little to moderate pain in most areas. You don't want to use the epi in soft sensitive areas like; behind the knee, bikini area, underarms or on the face. Using it in those areas will have you feeling like you died and went to h*#l. However, and this is depending on coarseness and hair density, the pain is very moderate and feels more like tiny pin pricks that you quickly adjust to. I've never waxed my legs but have waxed my bikini area and eyebrows enough to know you usually check to see if you still have skin attached because it hurt so bad. I think the more you epilate or wax, your pain threshold increases because you learn what to expect and know that you will live through it, lol.

  • Hi Rebekah,

I've been using an epilator (an Epilady Ultra) for years and have pretty good luck with it. The first time is painful and can leave your skin red, but if you use it regularly it hurts less and you get used to it.

I'm fair skinned and have minimal fine body hair, less than some GGs I've known. Depending how much and how coarse yours is you may find different results.

I've seen ads for smaller ones for facial use but I haven't tried one.

Remember to use a moisturizing skin lotion.

    Hope this helps

    Best,
    Melody

  • Hi Rebekah ,
I have to agree with Marsha, do not use this on your face. I believe the epilators, have come a long way since the time I tried them. But early on before I knew better, I tried this on my face, and yes I believe I went to hxxx and back Marsha, back was a long trip believe me. I just finally went broke down and started electrolysis, to remove hair on the arms, face and back, it just made more sense to me and it worked. But there was unbelievable pain associated with that also in the sensitive areas, especially the knuckle area of the hands believe it or not, a little off topic now. I also tried the hair removal creams but with sensitive skin that was also a mistake. Electrolysis was my only solution.

  • I had the Braun epilator and found it h*ll, it was so painful. By a huge margin it was far more painful than either laser or electrolysis and the redness afterwards looked like I had ran naked through a field of nettles! Needless to say it soon went in the bin and I went down the laser/electrolysis route instead.

  • How dare someone say the E word! Even just the thought of it and I break out with skin iritations.

  • To me, one of the nicest things about an epilator is that it can be used to thin the hair, rather than remove it all. I have somewhat hairy arms, but after brushing the epilator quickly over them several times, I find that my hairy arms are now still hairy enough not to look strange in male mode, but to look feminine enough when dressed. I use it to completely clean off my wrists and the backs of my hands (knuckles included!), and otherwise the back of my neck and my legs. If you use it regularly, the pain is quite bearable, and the results are great. Hair grows back fine and sparse. I only have to do my legs once every few weeks now.
And yes, on the arms only I get those red spots, but they go away within a day....

  • Just to report back on this... I got one. It's a braun wet and dry one.
I've found it ace for my arms and my lower legs, and just about bearable on my thighs. However, experimenting on my chest found it /way/ too owie,

Thanks for all the hints, tips, opinions and advice!

  • Out of curiosity, I tried one years ago for a few months. You eventually get desensitized to the pain on the arms and legs - but removing hair from my decolletage and stomach was unbearable. For me, waxing is far more enjoyable, effective and quicker.

Those contraptions irritated my skin and not all the hairs got pulled from the root - so I had to contimnually touch up patches from day to day - As advertised, I was hoping my body hair would eventually get the idea and give up or at least thin out, but no such luck for me. It became too much of a daily event.

Waxing leaves my skin much smoother, the effects last longer and I enjoy the process when preparing for infrequent special occasions. Usually, I'll just shave in the tub each morning - and when in a hurry, it only takes me a few minuites - or I can relax, soak and take my time.

I can't imagine using one on facial hair.

I'm glad you got some satisfaction, but don't expect any miracles...however, if you do, PLEASE let us know.

  • After at least 14 years, my beloved (and to be honest sometimes hated) Epilady Ultra has died. Just wouldn't recharge any more. R.I.P.

Luckily, Home Shopping Chanel (HSN) is offering an Emjoi Elegant Multi-purpose Epilator which also has two other interchangeable heads, a shaver/trimmer and a exfoliator for both face and body. It's their "Today's Special Value" for $69.95US. That's about half of what I paid for the Epilady a decade and a half ago. Hope it works as well and lasts as long.

Hoping to be hairfree again on June 4 when it's scheduled to arrive,
    Melody

  • Hi Girls,

I mentioned in this thread that I'd ordered a replacement epilator for my old one that finally bit the dust.

I've been using the new one for a couple of weeks. Works pretty good but has a tendency to grab the flesh at my wrists into the blades. Didn't ever break the skin, but had to very gently free up the trapped skin from the pincers. Left a couple of ugly bruises, but I've learned to make sure the skin is stretched tight in that area when I use it.

Reason I'm posting is an incident that happened at my local high end supermarket this week. They have the best meat in the area and they stock some premium brands that the other local stores don't. I was buying some steaks for my 4th of July grill and one of the regular checkers was ringing up my purchases.

I was in drab mode: polo shirt, jeans, sneakers and a "Fox Sports" baseball cap. (I have almost no interest in sports, but it's the best cap I own, a customer loyalty reward from my old cable company.) The checker, as usual, engaged me in a conversation about sports, because of the cap I guess, and I was doing my best to fake my way through based on what I'd ignored while watching my local newscast the night before. Same old, same old.

Suddenly he saw my hairless arms and went dumb - stopped babbling about sports in mid-sentence. He started staring at me, especially my arms, with the strangest look in his eyes. I was truly worried he was about to come on to me. Strange feeling.

Since I have never been very hairy anyway, I was totally surprised by his reaction. Guess it takes all kinds...

    Best,
    Melody

  • I like my epi and have never experienced the wrist issue, but early on when I first got the thing I made the mistake of running it behind my knees. It felt like some meat eating monster trying to get under my skin to devour me from the inside out, not a good feeling. As if that was not enough I eventually built up the courage to try under the arms, big mistake again. Ok, maybe I'm not the brightest so I tried it on my pubic hair, I'm betting the United Nations lists that as torture punishable by death. So now I stick to just my legs and arms and really like it. I have a Braun Silk-Epil.

As for people noticing the lack of arm hair I get that all the time from customers who have known me for years. They usually start off with something about body hair and then seem surprised when they realize I have little hair on my arms. For me since I live as a woman now it is more of an "Oh wow" thing for these customers that suggests to them that I am clearly in fact more like a woman now.

    Hugs,
    Marsha
