PayPal tries to close down Trannyweb

  • February 15, 2005 9:49 PM GMT
I did a google search of Paypal last night, and quite honestly I think we are well rid of them,
They are currently in the middle of a class action lawsuit in the United States.
There are numerous stories about their mismanagement of people`s money, they have cleaned out bank accounts without authorization, they have also frozen user accounts for months on end and kept money that does not belong to them, unfortunately as they are not a registered bank, they are not regulated in any way whatsoever.

I have no idea in the US, but PayPal are regulated in the UKI under the same rules as any other financial institution.

That may well be because of how things have gone with PayPal in the US though. lol

I feel as though PayPal have held us to ransom - dictating how our site should be.

Now that we are rid of them, I don't think we should become a porn site but I also don't think we should be running scared.

Let's keep our TrannyFantasies forum but let's bring it inside for members only. That way banking snoops and minors will not have access and it will become another incentive to take out a Full Membership.

    What does the team think?

i absolutely agree with all of that katie. there are plenty of porn sites out there, what we offer is far more valuable.
yes, the fantasies forum should be members only.

I'm not going to disagree with that, I think you are perfectly correct Katie, a great idea.

I agree to. But only to keep out the type of person that thinks a tranny site is only about sex. Think what it would be like if anyone could post a pic. It would be a porno site.

    Wendy/Cerys.

Definitely agree we need to make more of the positive aspects of the site like the safe and friendly chatroom, the depth and breadth of knowledge and the general level of support and understanding.

I think the introductory letter to all new applicants which has to be returned before approval is given is a great idea, seem to be a lot of people come in with a silly name to look for sex and then go. OK, not against that but there are plenty of places elsewhere on the net do we really want it here?

I also think we should have a clearly worded statement on the main page outlining our policy on behaviour, attitude, adult material etc. Something which has been agreed by the majority and will be stuck to. I'm no prude but I think we either allow nuidty or not there should be no grey area on that issue but its something that would need to be a majority decision. Maybe a Tranny Survey is needed on this.

    just my thoughts

I personally am of the opinion that there should be no nudity in the public areas at all (making it an easier policy to manage). I'm not against nudity, but I'm all for making things easier to manage.

On the other hand, the rest of the site is a different matter.

given i did an annual membership a year back (i figured i had the cash at the time, and may not every month.. funny i turned out to be right for once..).

Once me membership is up for renewal, well by hook or by crook it will be done, but do i have to sign up for anything *now* or is metacharge basically something that gets setup.. and takes effect when tis due?

    HI Katie,

I would vote for moving the Fantasy forum to members only.

Would it make sense for you to start a thread to gather input on what our TWeb community would consider as acceptable content / code of conduct? I'm all for requiring an acceptance of the policy as part of the registration process (via email).

    A supportive sister,

I have a question. When I signed on I didn't use paypal. I'm monthly. From what I've been reading my membership would expire every month. But it doesn't. Or if it does I haven't been told. Am I paying every month or am I getting away with it.

I've had to do a lot of thinking about this whole issue of censorship. While I still contend that the final decision must be Katie's, I am now leaning more toward the "family values" site a lot of girls wanted. There are other sites where those interested in sex/voyarism/etc can go. Perhaps TW SHOULD be the jewel in the crown of TG sites instead of being a place where there is something for everyone TG, free of prejudice. The latter is *my* "dream". Yet, there is much to be said for creating a site that has the potential to increase respect for the TG community, even if it only represents some of us. Tri-Ess has it's standards for similar reasons. What I say really has no validity. Katie must decide her dream for TW. I do know that there are some girls I really care for here that have more unconventional sexual expression than I do. I would hate to lose them. I also blogged a personal experience that was certainly a sexual "fantasy" experience, though I tried to keep it R rated. The point being, not the plot but the female mental/emotional experience which I had and how it effected me emotionally. I took some time before deciding to even blog it, it being personal. My decision was that there have been times i was very frightened because I thought I was alone with these changes and I wanted others to know they were not. I would hate to see things like that go and there lies the danger of censorship. I recoil from the idea of an outside organization forcing us to change against our inclinations.

That said I will wholehartedly support whatever Katie and the majority of my sisters decide. Why? Because you do things for your family, even if you don't want exactly what they do.

The only thing I know for sure is that the idea of losing TW fills my eyes with tears and gives me a cold feeling in the pit of my stomach.

    Hi Wendy

Just checked mine, looks like everything is set for it to go out in a couple of months as well, guess we'll just have to see if it happens on the date. Or worse, if they take the cash out my account and don't pass it onto Katie!!!

I haven't been around much lately (too busy), but when I heard of this I was extremely angry, although not at all surprised. Many companies in the U.S. are controlled by right-wing extremists, and they would like nothing better than to silence us. It was a big mistake for the public to drift over to PayPal to the exclusion of all others; the lack of competition in the industry is, as could be predicted, causing problems. The best way to get back at PayPal is to use other services instead. Fortunately, there are other options.

Just in case the new payment service does the same thing one day, are there other alternatives? It would be wise to set up a few so that if one disappears, people can migrate to the others as they are doing now.

My annual subscription is due to expire in March, and I will renew it soon.

Good luck, Katie. I am sure we can get through this.

    Ladies:

Just scrolled through this set of posts.

We have a minor problem (Outside of funding) that has been hit on: Too much of the wrong kind of stuff.

Back when I joined TW, I did so becauseit met (and still is meeting) my needs as a transgendered person, andit was a safe place to come to, to share with others what I was dealing with.

Of late, some of that has gone by the wayside. While it is still a safe place, and it still more or less meets my needs, frankly, luvs...it ain't what it used to be.

And it's not any one person's fault. Especially Katie's.

It's a group thing. We did this, in essence, to ourselves.

Before you all flame me, hold on and let me finish. There are certain things things, that when one joins, we are asked to do.

Some folks have not done so, and thus, the mess we are in.

Enough of that. How to fix it?

By all of us "owning" TW. Making sure each one of us abides by the guidelines of membership. By renewing (or becoming) full members, when you can.

I do not like censorship. (That's why I started Sakuramina.com--so I had a place to express myself freely.) But in a community like this, there are standards given, and we must enforce them...in short, a form of community self-censorship.

(Ick. I can't believe I just spouted that...)

    Katie, honey--

I've renewed for another year, up front. It ain't much, but I hope it helps. Metacharge was rather pleasant to use.

    Luv and hugs to all--

    Dr. Mina Sakura

    Hi Girls,

Just a quick word on the PayPal subscriptions. Although they may give the impression that they are still active, they will fail on their renewal day and PayPal will send you a message that says so.

They will probably try to put through the transaction two more times and then the subscription will be cancelled.

I think this is a very strange way to work but there's nothing I can do about it.

Anyway, the bottom line is that your PayPal subscriptions will never work again and you won't be charged.

Thanks for your thoughts Mina (and for resubscribing).

I think that most of us know what you're talking about and over the last couple of weeks we've tried to clean up the act a bit.

We now have notices on various Photo upload pages that say sexually explicit pictures are not allowed and many of the girls have been looking out for naughty pics and alert me whenever they see one.

So we're getting there - perhaps we were a bit complacent before but now we're on our guard a bit more.

    Hugs,

    Katie x
