Changing our name

Hi girls, allow me consult you on a fairly big change we're thinking about right now.

In a move to give our members more of a feeling of belonging, we'd like to change our name from just Trannyweb to something that suggests we are a community or club for TG people (which of course, we are). We do need to keep the word Trannyweb in the new name though.

A few ideas that we are already seriously looking at include...

    The Trannyweb Alliance

    The Trannyweb TG Association

    The Trannyweb Society

    The Trannyweb TG Community

    The Trannyweb League

    The Trannyweb TG Syndicate

One name that I liked but which might give out the wrong signals is, "Trannyweb International Transgender Society!" It's the acronym for that which might cause us problems.

What are your thoughts and can you think of any more potentially great names that include the word "Trannyweb"?

If you can, please drop me a line at [email protected]

    Thanks and hugs,

    Katie x

    I'd rename 3 of those.

    1- The Trannyweb Association

    2- The Trannyweb TG Society

    3- The Trannyweb Community

Any one of the 3 would be OK with me.

  • Katie, if i'm honest the one that stands out for me, and gives a feeling of " Belonging" would be the Trannyweb Society because it feels right.

  • If you are after an acronym I like Joni Marie's except I would change International to Identity. Trannyweb Gender Identity Resources Links and Support. TGIRLS

Dropping the acronym I would like something like Trannyweb International TG Support Centre. Something about Society and Association just doesn't do anything for me. Doesn't sound friendly,

    Hugs,
    Marsha

  • Katie:

Being very new to this community, I put forth my view on this subject with the caveat that more experienced members may not agree.

The Trannyweb Alliance - suggests to me that the site is allied to one or more other sites, rather than an independent entity

The Trannyweb TG Association - to me, an association is a fairly focused entity, with a single aim in mind - not sure that the wide-ranging demographic here would fit with that

The Trannyweb Society - see above for association

The Trannyweb TG Community - like this one a lot - for me, this captures the 'broad church' spirit of Trannyweb

The Trannyweb League - for me, has sporting overtones, which doesn't really strike a chord

The Trannyweb TG Syndicate - again, for me, suggests pools or the lottery...

    Your mileage may vary

    Hugs,
    Judith

  • I personally would go for Jopni's or Marsha's. alliance. etc sounds a bit impersonal, society sounds needy, But TYrannyweb must still be included, somthing that has become well known and synonomous with support and freindship.

Thanks girls, your ideas and feedback are most helpful. We're not going for acronyms though. Using an acronym for our name would be very impersonal so it's got to be the full thing.

I only mentioned the acronym in my last post because I thought it was quite funny. Personally, I would go for The Trannyweb Association or The Trannyweb Community. Association sounds a bit more bona fide though and would help our dealings with other organisations, many of whom will not even give us the time of day right now, for fear that we are some kind of porn site or a club for perverts.

Calling us an association would hopefully put paid to any ideas like that.

Anyway, please keep your ideas and thoughts coming.

    Hugs,

No one has mentioned "sorority." Is there an aversion to that?

I liked your joke about TITS, very funny - but it would cause problems.

Thanks Mary for the sorority idea. However, I have to admit that for me too, the word sorority reminds me of movies like Animal House and Porkies.

I see where you're coming from Danique, but the name change is not only to help our credibility with third parties. It's also to make us sound more like an organisation that you can belong to, like a member of a family.

We've spent almost a decade building up the Trannyweb brand to the huge level of awareness it has now. It would be professional suicide to drop it now.

I understand what you mean though and can see the merit in starting from scratch with a new, non-tranny name, but I'm afraid that we just can't do that for the reasons I gave above.

Thanks though, that was a good suggestion.

    Keep 'em coming girls.

    Thanks and hugs,

  • Dear Katie,
I think our world 's got to deal with two issues. How do I deal with anything in my life regarding gender and when are we getting the right atmosphere to live in it. Looking at these two points I should suggest " Gendersphere" Probably you could add "Your" in front of it.
    Greetings, Conny

  • Given what's been put on the table for consideration, I prefer Trannyweb Community or some variation that includes the word "community" because it just sounds, well...communal..

  • Since you've already invested a decade into the TrannyWeb name, why not just updating it a bit?

A way to involve the individual in a sense of community (an alliance) yet allowing each to maintain their own identitiy ( however they define themselves under the TG umbrella) and obviously poitning to the resources that are here to help nurture ourselves.

To turn the word tranny into something better descriptive such as:

    T...Transgendered
    R..Resorce
    A...Alliance
    N..Naturally
    N..Nurturing
    Y..Yourself

Web obviously speaks for itself on a dual purpose. Not only the cyber definition and world wide focus but also for the strands of the web linking us all together.

  • It would be just as bad to call ourselves Tranny Web International Transgender Society (TWITS)

What about: Trannyweb International Trans Community or Trannyweb Worldwide Trans Community!

  • Tranny Web Organization (TWO). Imparts the idea that we are a Web Organization of Transgendered people and keeps our "brand name" which has been recognized as the best in the world in 2008. I also think it's a catchy acronym. Short, simple, easy to remember. Many of you used the word "organization" in the discussion above. Seems like a natural to me.

The use of "Tranny" follows the lead of a lot of GLBT organizations that took the insult "Queer" and turned it into a self-identification to remove it's sting. Thus the term "gender queer". When it is changed from a tool for harm to a battle cry, it takes on a whole new connotation.

  • The Trannyweb Community stands out for me because I'd like to think that that's what we are. I did like TGIRLS though, not bad, Joni, it must have been a very good wine!

Ultimately, I do think we are 'stuck' with having 'Tranny' in the name though, although I don't see that as necessarily a bad thing. Okay, a google search might show up something nasty but it will also show the respectable sites too, after all, that's how I found this place.

Association and Society were okay too, although I didn't like any of the others.

  • I totally agree with like Marsha and while I think the term association will bring us more acceptance in some areas (thats of major importance) I always like the names that sound like a family community.

so here are the 2 that I like in there respective order:

    The Trannyweb TG Community
    The Trannyweb TG Association

  • Maryanne made lots of valid points but I think the problem word "Trannyweb" kind of sort of needs to still be used for the simple reason the way the internet works with search engines, it takes forever and multiple listings to be visible. Trannyweb is well established and changing the name will require rebuilding the name recognition which Katie can't really afford with the current economic climate. I think what Katie is after is to build on the Trannyweb name, not replace it. Possibly a new name followed by "formerly Trannyweb" could temporarily fill that name recognition issue.

As for TW becoming more TS oriented, that is a tough one to answer. I know I approve far more pics for CD/TV's than I do TS's. I believe maybe the type of participation has possibly changed, but not necessarily the makeup of TW. The same way Maryanne says this has become more TS oriented I can say it seems UK oriented. Sometimes it just seems there must be a TG living on every street corner in the UK, how come so few live in my city. I even had one of my customers tell me last week that a relative in the UK is TS, go figure.

    Hugs,
    Marsha

  • Actually I thought it has become more TV oriented in the chatroom so I guess that goes to show how different it can be depending upon when you log in.

I think the forums tend to be responded to mostly by TS's though, perhaps that's due to them not being concerned only with 'tranny' issues so will tend to respond to any subject regardless.

Marsha - you would be amazed at how many people here have said the site has become too US oriented!!

What does it matter, as long as you continue to get something from it, or are happy putting something into the site?

I often hear people saying that TW is too American or too British, too TS, too CD or too whatever.

Here are the official stats, direct from our database.

Today, March 19th 2009, we have 26258 members of which...

241 are Female to Male TS's
    421 are Significant Others
524 are Female to Male Crossdressers
    912 are "None of these"
2713 have not expressed a preference
    2978 Male to Female TS's
    6580 are Tranny Admirers
11889 are Male to Female CD's

The top 20 geographic groups are as follows...

    United States - 10950
    United Kingdom - 7266
    Canada - 1199
    Australia - 992
    Ireland - 384
    Germany - 367
    Italy - 296
    Netherlands - 265
    France - 253
    India - 222
    Spain - 211
    Turkey - 151
    Belgium - 142
    New Zealand - 129
    Mexico - 128
    Sweden - 123
    Portugal - 104
    Greece - 101
    South Africa - 97
    Norway - 89

And you can see the whole worldwide list here...

It may take a while for this page to load though, so please be patient.

Anything outside these numbers must be down to one group shouting louder than another.

  • Hi Katie,

Looking at all the suggestion provided so far and juggling the words around some I came up with this "The International Transgendered Trannyweb Society!". Just a suggestion.

Hope your day and week are going well and as always wish you the best.
