Hi Karen-
Well, as far as color, that seems to be a personal preference kind of thing, though coordinating it with your outfit seems like a good idea. You know, something in the same color palette depending on what you have on or maybe to add some color and contrast. One thing I have heard over and over is if you're really doing your eyes, like a very dramatic look, then your lipstick should be more subdued and the other way around, also, if you want to wear a bright lippy then you should play down your eyes. If you do both, dramatic eyes and bright red lipstick, you kind of wind up with that hooker look. (What's wrong with that, Joni asks.) You probably already know all about that anyway, I guess it's silly to even mention it.
I know Cover Girl makes a two part lip color product, because I just went to my makeup case and looked. It consists of a color layer and a seperate topcoat that adds shine. The color part is fine by itself if you want a matte look, the clear coat makes it glossy and kind of "wet" looking. It stays on really well and you can eat and drink and it won't come off when you wipe your lips. One thing though, is to avoid salty foods like chips and nuts and so on which will make it come off for some reason. Good health tip there anyway.<lol> One thing you should be aware of though is that it stays on really, really well. You will have to scrub your lips with a washcloth if you really want to make sure it's all gone. There are probably other makers out there, too, but that's the one I know about.
Just out of curiosity, what's the problem with whipping out your lipstick and touching up? To me, it's one of the girliest things things you can do.<lol>
Hugs...Joni Marie
