How did you choose your femme name?

Here's a question that has often been seen in our forums over the years but has not been asked in the last year or two.

How did you choose your femme name? Let me get the ball rolling by telling you about mine.

When I was in my early teens I had a number of crushes as most teenagers do. I remember being crazy about Katy Manning who was one of Dr Who's girly assistants. Although my Katie is spelt differently, that's where my first name is from.

I was also nuts about Patrick Glover's two daughters in the popular 1970's sitcom, "Father, Dear Father". So that's how my last name came about. It's a kind of homage to them.

Does Katie have any middle names? Well that's a secret!

So what about you? Where did you get your name from?

    Hugs,

    Katie x

  • Hi Katie,

I thought of so many names and I always came back to Katherine. I've used it now for about 15 years. I was looking for a name that was clearly feminine. Also, any nicknames derived from it had to be equally fem. As it turns out it is also the first initial of my male name, so my initials didn't change.

  • I have openly mentioned a number of times that my birth name was Mark, so Marsha came off the tongue easily. The middle name of Ann fit nicely and the combination Marsha Ann gave me the same number of syllables as my birth first and middle name. I choose not to use my last name here for privacy reasons. I have thought of myself as Marsha for as long as I can remember. I don't know exactly where it came from, perhaps the Brady Bunch or just that I was born in an era that Marsha was not so uncommon. I consider the name to be age appropriate for a 50 year old woman. On April 10, 2009 I legally had my name changed to Marsha Ann. There was never a question of what I would change my name to, it is just who I am.
    Hugs,

  • My birth name was Christopher James D......, so just adopted the name Cristine Jennifer, dropped the surname, I'm mad enough as it is with out having the acronym of a bovine disease for my initials lol, so the name Skye came up, mispelt it and it came out shye, liked that better, more original. So thats me done, not anything as romantic or exotic as having an idol or anything. Oh and dropped the H from Christine, just to be controversial and different.

  • For me I just always liked the name Stephanie. For a long time I tried to find another name because I was saving it for what i hoped to be my first born daughter some day. Eventually I realized that Stephanie is who I am. I spell it the long way because I think it looks better that way.

I chose Jillian as my femme name because I liked the sound it made - to me it sounds happy. But it had no connection with anyone or anything in my life.
My wife and I usually talk about our dreams - if we can remember them.
One morning she told me she had a dream in which both of us were going somewhere (she couldn't remember where) and she kept calling me Mary Grace. She couldn't remember why she associated me with the name or the name with me.
Soooo, I took it as a message from her subconscious or possible past life and adopted it as mine and ever since i've been Mary Grace.
It does seem rather formal so I usually sign off my "contributions" as Gracie. ( I'm originally from Brooklyn)
    thanks and big hugs
    Gracie

Always hated my male first name Ray. [yuk!]. But as soon as my sister suggested Rae it sounded so much sweeter :)
My maternal grandmothers name was Kelso which I used briefly but preferred the original French spelling Kelcou.

So got my new name whilst retaining familial roots.

    Much love

  • It was my understanding that if my parent's first child was a girl, then she would have been called Rachel. So that's what I had called myself for a long time. When I joined here, the membership form introduced the topic of a surname for the first time. Avoiding my surname for privacy, I initially chose an abbreviated version and this allowed me to retain my true initials. I looked this up on Google and discovered she already existed as a stripper. Not wishing to undermine her reputation, I then decided to choose a surname that was the opposite of my real name but White sounded a bit pure, so De Blanc emerged. The thrill of having a proper name overcame my apprehensions about the name, for a while at least. Now, I regret that it sounds a little like a drag artist, a bit vaudeville. It's nothing to do with any song title by The Police, French relatives or actors that have appeared in Friends. I've thought about taming it down recently, to make me sound less pompous, but you grow into it don't you? (Do you mean that you've tried to become more pompous?. Ed)

Since - and more aware of this demands of this journey, I've regretted not calling myself Helen Bach, but that's a joke I've used here previously..

a girl at heart and a proper person too

We go through this in cycles...! I know in the archives we've talked about names. At least twice! But it is good to go through it again, every so often.

I chose my name (after having tried two others!) based on simple personal preference. Sakura in Japanese is "Cherry Blossom", and Minako is Beautiful (little) child. So my name translates into "Beautiful Child of the Cherry Blossom." Mina (pronounced "Mee-nah") is the informal use of Minako.

Having said that, I still feel you should choose your name wisely. See why here.

Luv 'n hugs to you all,

    Mina Sakura

Funnily enough, 'Zoe' is a name I've always liked, as is 'Paige' and 'Taylor' is the surname of the two main characters in a novel I'm sketching out...

    It's a funny old life.

  • I picked Melody because I liked it's sound and as a bit of a joke. (I'm not terribly musical - I've played a few instruments over the years but I've never gotten past mentally keeping time while mechanically fingering the instrument. Never got to the making music stage, think "player piano")
Originally I picked Anderson as my surname, don't know why other than M.A. is the reverse of my drab/male initials. Then I found out there is a Canadian movie/TV actress named Melody Anderson (1980-Flash Gordon) and I wanted to be unique so I took Anders from another movie/TV actress, Merry Anders. That kept the same initials and sounded nearly the same.

    Best,

    Melody Anders

  • Over the years I dreamt of being many names but didnt really define a persona until I joined TW where I came up with Anyfer. When it came to signing my deed poll I got all serious and chose a name from my childhood. It was the defining moment of when I became aware of my gender conflict. I noticed a girl called Penny and she was the embodiment of everything i considered feminine and I was left confused as to why I wasnt like her and that moment stuck with me ever since.
Anyfer is now my second name.
I dont use my last name online for privacy reasons.
Just an ordinary girl finding her way in this strange life. - What will it take to get everyone to realise that everyone else is also a human being that deserves just as much respect? - How does someone tell their doctor they have hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia? - When I was a student I specialised in Alcopology. It always starts with Alco and always ends with pology. - Waiter! There's a hare in my rabbit pie!

  • I refused to give myself a female name despite workmates calling me variations of my male name and others...then when I just could not stop 'inprivate' any longer and had to get out and about I had to get a name and Rose just fitted the woman I had always imagined myelf to be...

  • Hi: I chose mine because Jackie IS my real first name and my middle initial is "N" and after much
thought, a friend from another site suggested that "Nicole" was a nice name, so I became "Jackie Nicole"
it sounded like it was mine all along.
    Jackie Nicole :)

  • I thought for awhile about my favorite female names and all of the women and girls who were special to me in my life.
Then I ruled out any names of close relatives or friends who might be embarrassed if they knew. I settled on Donna. I have known several girls with this name who were very special in some way. The last name is shortened from a grandmother's maiden name.

  • Yes, I remember this post from quite a while ago.
Well, my name was originally Joanne, I took it from a very found lady friend of mine, but it just did not fit, and I was getting mixed up with another girl in the area that I did not wish the same association to. I always liked Tammy( it fit my style) I really wanted Tammy Rose, but I knew a girl from my youth whom had that name, so out of respect, I choose a different middle name to keep pace with my male initials....this way I would not have a senior moment..LOL .......Huggs...Tammy

  • Lesley came about because I am a big fan of Lesley Gore. Charles is my male middle name, hence keeping a part of my past.
Renee, a guy I was seeing at the time suggested it and I liked it. Escpecially since it means rebirth.
