    Merseyside Police Launches Transgender Policy

Merseyside Police is launching a new policy on Tuesday 27th January 2004, in an attempt to recognise transgender issues in the community.

As part of Neighbourhood Policing, Merseyside Police has been developing links with a number of groups of 'vulnerable minorities' including members of the transgender/ transsexual communities.

National transgender issues are often associated with the gay, lesbian and bisexual agenda. However Merseyside Police are taking a separate approach, recognising that transgender issues are entirely different and deserving of recognition in their own right.

Sgt. Chris Wathan of Community Relations said, "Some people in Merseyside suffer assault, harassment, verbal abuse or other hostility because of their actual or perceived gender identity. These attacks, along with racist incidents and certain others, are known collectively as 'hate' incidents. We have a duty to protect those in society who are vulnerable to such victimisation."

"All these incidents will be dealt with thoroughly, sensitively and confidentially. People who carry out such acts should be left in no doubt that their behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

The introduction of the policy follows a recently published draft Gender Recognition Bill, which is set to change the law in respect of the status of transgender people.

The policy has been written in consultation with members of Merseyside Police's Independent Advisory Group and individuals from the transgender community. Love JJ xx

The issue of TG/TS violence has been an ongoing topic here in the States after several recent incidents. One of the most distressing things to occur was the brutal beating and murder of a young T-girl named Gwen Araujo. The three young men who killed her had been having a sexual relationship with her for a couple of weeks prior. They were all at a party together when Gwen was confronted by a young GG who then proceeded to make a big issue about Gwen's "true identity". Embarrasment turned to rage as her former boyfriends beat her to death and then took her body out to a forest and buried her. For more details about the crime and the ongoing trial, Google Gwen Araujo.
Meanwhile, it does my heart good to read that the British police are recognizing the special circumstances our community has to face. >>> Cyndi
