A Memory

  • Blue skies as far as the eye can see. The sun is glorious. I soar, high above the pearly mist of the clouds, the buffeting wind in my face. I feel like I could do this forever. This is perfection. But even perfection doesn’t go on forever.
I feel a tug pulling me towards the clouds. It comes again, more insistent this time. I wheel and turn but can not resist the pull. Finally, dipping a wing, I turn and dive. The wind thunders in my ears as I hurtle toward the the clouds. They envelope me in an instant. The sudden chill is a sharp slap in the face. The warm, bright sun has vanished replaced by the gray cold mist. The pull is stronger now. It seems to be drawing me somewhere but I still don’t know where. I’m falling faster and faster.
Lightning flashes and I feel my body convulse as thunder roars in my ears. The lightning flashes again and I scream and writhe then everything is still.
I hear murmuring voices. There is a dim light and I smell antiseptic. My chest hurts.
I remember. I was dead. Now? I feel the tears on my face and know I’m back.
