Transgender beauty queen back in pageant

  • TORONTO – A transgender beauty queen who was ousted from the Miss Universe Canada pageant will get to compete after all — so long as she can prove she's a she.

Jenna Talackova, 23, will be allowed to strut the Miss Universe Canada stage with the other 60 finalists, the pageant owned by mogul Donald Trump has decided.

"The Miss Universe organization will allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions,” reads a statement by Trump headquarters in New York City.

Talackova said she had final gender reassignment surgery four years ago and is a full-fledged woman.

She is holding a press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Miss Universe rules require candidates to be "naturally born" female.

Talackova failed to mention on her application that she was born a he, and was punted from the competition last month.

The resulting furor went worldwide and included petitions calling for her reinstatement.

The pageant runs May 19 at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto.

  • I think that whilst this is a tiny step forward, I still think that this is a slight on Jenna Talackova unless all of the contestants are asked to 'prove' that they are women.

And what proof are they demanding - a chromosome test? Does she have to strip naked in fronnt of Trump? Does she have to have sex with one of them to prove she has a functional vagina?

  • I would love it if she made the top 10. As for proving it, hopefully, she has legal standing in Canada as her chosen gender.

  • It's horrible really, that she should have to prove it at all. I'm sure we work harder at being beautiful than most of those girls in the pageant. We have to work against man features and hormones... lets see them do that!

  • Yes Michelle - and I would love it even more if she won - there is no doubt she is incredibly beautiful.

  • I really do hope this keeps drawing attention in the media. Hopefully it will work out to benifit TG rights in the end. I've been following the story and it still seems a bit unresolved. I do get mad at the many ignorant comments people are making on the web. So many people are so mean out there. To me it is a BEAUTY pageant. She is beautiful. That should be all that matters, not to mention she also has all here legal documents in order. It will be interesting to watch this evolve.
