    Hey everyone,

I am in urgent need of help.

I have a Doctor's appointment at 10 to 5 to open up about my transsexuality and ask for referral to a gender therapist. I am scared *beep*less I have no idea what to say or how to address the issue.

    I need help!!!

    Anybody??

Hi Rosie, I know of at least one girl who wrote a letter to her GP , to break the ice as it were , perhaps a short note which you can just hand to him/her would overcome the difficult "opening" of the conversation, hope this helps

So good luck and keep your head held high-- chances are you will not be the first to tell your GP.

    Hugs

    Rosie

    Hi rosie.

Just tell your doctor ou need a gender referral and go from there.

They have rules they must to follow, if you're not satisfied then make a complaint and get another doctor.

    Good Luck.

    Hello Rosie

I too have recently convided my Gender Dysphoria issues to my GP. I was referred to Cumbria's only Psycho-sexual Counsellor. This meeting was a mixed success as - although I am continuing to see her she doesn't as yet seem able to comprehend that my issues are something deeper than Crossdressing.

By contrast my GP has been very helpful and welcomed the links to WPATH etc I could provide - and took bloods to establish a base line should hormone therapy be appropriate.

I'm sure there are many here that have walked the same path... the consistent peice of advice I've been given and am trying to follow is to be oneself and truly honest about ones own feelings, experience, hopes and aspirations.

With me it feelings like I've crossed Rubricorn - even if I'm still evaluating just how completely I wish to transition.

I'd be interested to continue to share experiences.

    Nuala

OMG!  She does not know about gender disorders?   She is the local expert?   You Brits are not kidding, NHS is awful!

But seriously, she is the psycho-sexual counsellor?  Perhaps she specializes in Bondage and Discipline. :-)

    You should get a discount.

Seriously, ( they fell for this once, they will probably fall for it again)  if she is any good as a therapist, she will find out and it is not as important that she know as that she is capable  of helping you deal with what you feel.  Therapists are coaches, nothing more.  You have to play the game.

Ok lets put this to bed shall we? The person who posted this is seeking your attention. Why? I have no clue maybe they are just bored and found this website by pure accident. The only thing Trans about this person is Transparency.

    http://gendersociety.com/forums/topic/9534/help-i-can-t-handle-being-trans

No more sympathy this is all a wind-up and you fell for it. Next time check their history first and ignore any fakes.

Wendy. Please do not knock our NHS , if it is wasting money on idiots like the one who posted this thread yes it does cost money. Our health system works fine but would work much better without the 2 billion GBP that health tourism costs the tax payer and the 90.000 unemployed non UK born benifit claimants we are stuck with. I am not a racist our health service would fail without migrant doctors and nurses but at least they contribute to our society and in a big way. The world envy's what we have here that is why we attract them like a magnet.

    Julia,

Sorry, cultural curve ball,      "But serriously," is a standard comedy line over here and means exactly the opposite.  Actually my county system is pretty much like NHS, except when i turned 65 it threw me out.

Now do not get me started on Cricket.  THose chirpy bugs drive  me crazy.  they just go on forever. :-)

Nuala, I've only just seen your post here so I'm sorry this is a little belated...
I'm in Kendal, Cumbria. When I first saw my GP I just asked to be referred to a gender clinic, preferably Charing Cross (as each of my visits there was also an excuse for a day or two out in London).
The standard procedure is for your GP to refer you to a local psychiatrist - non gender-specialist, who, if they decide you have no mental health problems will then refer you to the gender clinic.
There should be no need to see a psycho-sexual counsellor unless you specifically wish to. The gender clinics have such counsellors, probably more suitably experienced by the sound of it, but again it is completely up to you to decide if you want to see them. They may also offer to put you in touch with support groups, again your call - none of this is compulsory. Once you are registered at the gender clinic you should only have to see 2 gender specialists and you will get all the treatment you require. As well as authorising my GP to prescribe hormones they offered me (free on the NHS) voice therapy, voicebox surgery, tracheal shave and SRS. I had no problems anywhere along the line and everyone seemed to know what they were doing!
So I'm surprised that you've been sent to see someone who doesn't. Well it's six months since your post so hopefully you're further along the line now. But if not, just ask for a referral to a gender clinic and advise your GP to look into the correct procedure, as above.
And Rosie, you asked to see a gender therapist, have you seen one yet?
    xx
