Holly Woodlawn 1946-2015, Transsexual actress

    Holly was famous for gaining fame as a Super-star in Andy Warhol's films and inspired Lou Reed's song 'Walk on the Wild Side. She was a Transgender actress who embraced hormones but not GRS, subsequently a cabaret artist, assistant in, a restaurant back hiome in Miami, and enjoyed a second career as an actress in the 1990's.

     

    She was born to a father who swiftly deserted his family, leaving his wife and her parents to bring her up. Haroldo Santiago Francheschi Rodriguez Danhakl was born in Puerto Rico on October 26th 1946. His mother's second husband was a Polish waiter, Joseph Ajzenberg;and they settled in Miami Beach. His grandparents took him in together with eight aunts, one uncle, five cousins, six chickens and three pigs.

     

    He cross-dressed; and, on one fatal occasion, changed his clothes in a restaurant toilet, on his way to his hairdressing school session. He was promptly expelled for appearing 'as a girl'. At fifteen he fled his home and hitch-hiked to New York, scavenging what he could to survive, annd sleeping rough. Work gradually came in administration and then modelling clothes in Sack's Fifth Avenue. Her adopted name centred on a) the film's heroine in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's" and b) a sign which appeared in one of the 'I Love Lucy' comedy series.

     

    Earliest Acting roles: 1968 'Glamour, Glory and Gold', cast as a show girl.

    With Robert de Nero in 'The life and Legend of Nola Noonan, Godess,and Star'

     

    The Warhol years:  1970: N Met Warhol ata screening of 'Flesh' (Morrisey/Warhol) and then appeared in 'Trash' a cult film shot by Paul Morrisey.

    'Women in Revolt' satirising the female liberationist.

     

    Subsequent films: 'Twin Falls Idaho' and 'Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss'.

     

    Later career: a cabaret artist and then returned to Miami, where she worked as a waitresss in a restaurant

    In the 1990's she resurfaced acting minor-parts: Allan Mindel's 2004 'Milwauke, Minnesota' film where she appeared as a Drg Queen, prostitute and stret person. 'Transparent' was a recent television drama, when dad is found to have Gender Dysphotia.

    Lou Reed's song 'Walk on the Wild Side': My youth was exemplified by the 60's cult status; she will forever be imortalised in this song.

    "Holly came from Miami, FLA. Hitch-hiked her way across the USA, plucked her eyebrows on the way. Shaved her legs and then he was a she. She says,

    Hey babe , take a walk on the wild side'."

    er previous heroine addiction was not a causative factor in her admission to Hospital in Los Angeles; she died of Cancer.
