Still, Stiil Nearly There

Surely, nobody can be as frustrated with the recent lack of progress in getting this site live than me.  Well, lack of progress is not really fair because we have accomplished a great deal since my last blog entry.  However, a new tide of work has emerged that we had not reckoned on.

Several of the new toys we installed just didn’t work as they were meant to.  We have a new menu system ready to go but it's still under wraps because we don't want to confuse the various developers working on the site.  That took quite a bit of work to get it right and it's still not quite finished.

We recently installed a new news system which has turned out to be a bit problematic.  We're still tweaking that.

Then there's our new Profile Badges which seem like a good idea on the face of it.  The idea is that you can put a little snippet of code on your own web site and it appears as a GS Profile Badge.  Well that's the theory anyway, but so far we have been unable to make it work.  This item has had more problems than any other.  It was full of bugs.  I really don't know how a developer can sell something like that knowing it's not yet finished.

And our migration of the data from our old site is not finished either.  There are still many problems with that but our developer who was handling that seems to have gone AWOL as we have not heard from him for a couple of weeks.

Add to that the fact that a new, unstable version of our core software has been released.  We will now have to wait for another two weeks for a stable version to be released, then about another couple of weeks or so after that our developers will be able to create new versions of their modules which will work with the new core software.  All of that will have to be installed and tested.

There are at least twenty other smaller jobs which I am personally juggling right now.  I'm getting through them slowly though but more keep appearing.

We also have some more toys to install to enhance the site even more and offer even more features to our members.  I wonder how many of those will work out of the box and how many will need weeks of work before they do what is says on the tin?

Finally, we have a custom job on the go to add a billing module to our new site so that we can continue to charge membership fees to our existing Full Members.  This needs to be tried and tested and in place before we switch sites.  Currently however, it is still just a spec and nobody has even looked at it.

So, I'm sorry but it may be a while yet before we can launch but when we do, this site will undoubtedly be the very best site on the web for TG people.

Sorry that everything has got so far behind.

    Hugs, Katie   x

  • Joni Mari Cruz No worries, Katie. The old place is still alright, the heat and lights are on and though a bit threadbare in places, it's still home and comfy enough. Soon it'll be on to the new digs and if there are a few delays in making sure it's just right, well,...  more
  • Tina B Not to worry Katie, it is best to get everything right, as far a possible, best not to go off half cocked - so to speak. We all know you are working hard to get everything working how you want it.
  • Angharrad Reece Looks like you're making progress - I just clicked on a blog link on the old site and ended up here!
