RISE OF THE VIDEO GAME Level 5 - Discovery Channel - Dec 19, 2007
80% of female characters in MMO's are being played by "males".
*****
I'm one of them. And it's not hard to do....just be yourself. I
never told anyone I was female. If you don't make a specific statement
to the contrary, you will be assumed to be your avatar. Men will accept
you with little supporting evidence. I have been given some of the most
valuable magic in the world simply because a male player finds my
avatar's appearance sexy. I have never solicited this attention...in
fact, I have often discouraged it. Women are harder to convince, but if
you are at all transgendered your socialization style will convince
them. In fact, I have found that I prefer playing with other women
online. They play............well, like me. In fact, I have played
games as a male and been invited to play with exclusively female groups
because of how I play/socialize.
So, if 80% of female avatars are actually played by males, what
does that say about the prevalence of transgenderism in the male
population of the real world? What does it say about what people
secretly REALLY want in the real world? Are there more of US out there
than has been estimated? In a safe, virtual world are men more likely
to let it all out? If not, what is the explanation for this phenomenon?

Coincidentally, I went back this weekend to the game with the female
group (mentioned above) after being away from the game for months
(technical problems). I expected to be remembered and accepted back
without any problem.....
I was virtually hugged and kissed and was treated to the virtual
equivalent of squealing and jumping up and down. I was made to feel
loved and missed and part of the crowd for the rest of the evening.
I've never had anything quite like it happen to me.....and I play
designated a male. It was quite remarkable. I was part of a female
social circle. I'm a bit buzzed by it and I'm beginning to understand
the power of membership in female groups and why it is so important and
why it is different from male groups. The understanding was impossible
without an emotional understanding rather than a logical one. It's
difficult to explain. It's rather like communicating in colors instead
of sounds....not really but its different and strange and wonderful. No
wonder men do not understand women's experience of the world around
them. One has to learn a whole different style of communication and
experience. It's no wonder our TS and non-TS members have difficulty
communicating ideas/feelings at times.
We really are from Mars and Venus. We don't even communicate the same way. It makes the difference between American and Japanese value systems during WWII seem like nothing in comparison.
What I can't communicate or explain are the feelings I've experienced tonight. You either understand them already, or you don't. The closest experience I have ever had is coming to an understanding of Ki in martial arts. It can't be explained or even shown clearly. You can only be led towards it until you accidentally experience it for yourself. In that moment you understand Ki and martial arts are never the same again. That's what tonight was like. I'm going to be in a daze for a bit. I'm not quite sure what is about to happen in my brain, but it will never be the same again.
