GENDER BEND HITS BABIES

BABY boys are being harmed by "gender bending" chemicals in thousands of products, say scientists.

Many are born with defects including undescended or small testicles and small genitalia.

And one expert said it could affect "every aspect of masculine identity".

The chemicals, phthalates, are used in products including plastics, lubricants and solvents and can be found in toys, paint, ink, vinyl flooring, hairspray, deodorant, nail polish and perfume.

Scientists at the University of Rochester in New York monitored pregnant women for metabolites - caused when phthalates break down in the body.


Those with higher levels were more likely to give birth to boys with the defects.


Team leader Prof Shanna Swan said they "can adversely affect male reproductive development". Prof Frederick vom Saal, of University of Missouri-Columbia, said: "The consequence is never just one outcome. You are very likely to see change in every aspect of masculine identity."


The WWF, which campaigns against harmful environmental chemicals, called the findings "startling - it highlights the need for tougher controls of gender-bending chemicals."
