I think you can tell a lot by what's on a persons desk (well kinda - but its just interesting), as you can see I am a total geekette, and proud of it

*a picture of our family travelling down a river in Montana; well, anyways, a picture of my daughter, actually, and my wife's head as she leaves the raft. At the time the picture was taken, I'm underneath the raft, having been tossed out earlier when we hit a boulder and came to a dead stop so, technically, you could call it a "family photo," but only the little one is fully visible through the foaming rapids taken courtesy of a passer-by who was more than happy to sell us the piture when she got to the end of the rapids run. Ack! Parenting! We both do our best to keep her in the raft and, guess what, she was the only one of us to stay in...
For the picture, please see my blog images. It's kinda cute and worth a look...

"Jack Vance"? I've never heard of him! (I typed his name into a search engine and found out that he is a science fiction author.)

I'm really out of it when it comes to modern culture. Modern writing styles, for the most part, are too fast-paced and minimalist - this probably goes with the shortening attention spans in society. Although I have read a lot, I could count on my fingers the number of fiction novels I have read that date after c. 1950.

I'm curious - what is it about him that made you think of him when you read my post? Now, I'm intrigued.

    (Sorry for derailing the thread!)

BTW, the same stuff is on my desk today - I don't clean stuff up very often.

    Now I get it!!!

Grues occur in various Infocom text adventure games from the 1970's/1980's, especially the classic Zork and Enchanter series. My sig comes from Zork - it is the standard line that comes up if you wander into a dark place without a light. Now I wonder who thought of grues first: Jack Vance or the authors of Zork. I'm going to have to research this.

Back to the topic of the thread...

Now, in addition to all the stuff I have mentioned, there is a glass of wine on my desk.
Also, there is a Wet Seal discount card and a file folder containing personality type profiles.

Practically anything could end up on my desk.

    HI Heather-

It was the mention of being eaten buy a "grue"! Grues are mentioned in a couple of his books. Jack Vance writes both "hard" SF, ie, stories based on plausible extensions of known technology and physical laws and also fantasy tales wherein things like magic and mythical creatures, like grues, exist. I had not heard grues mentioned anywhere except in his books, so I thought you might be a fan of his.

And I apologize as well for the slight off-topic sojourn.

    Hugs, Joni
