1 day at a time, 1 victory at a time

What may turn out to be a huge victory for transgender civil rights in the U.S., today the U.S. Justice Dept. made the decision not to appeal the decision in the Diane Schroer case. Two months ago a judge ruled in her favor that she had been sexually discriminated against under the Civil Rights Act. Although this decision was not made in the U.S. Superior Court, it does set a precedent for future cases throughout the country.

In my opinion this ruling has come at an optimal time because two bills currently effecting transgendered are in the works. First is hate crime legislation which includes gender identity, followed by the all inclusive Employment Non Discrimination Act. The Schroer case makes it clear that this administration does not approve of discrimination against our community.
