Is being transgendered news anymore?

I'm going to be bad and start a new topic here that I saw on another TG site and found interesting. So like the title of this thread says, "Is being transgendered news anymore?" First off let us all use the definition for transgendered as all encompassing of CD's, TV's, TS's and anyone else that lives part or fulltime as a different gender than they were born as. I think most of us are familiar with celebrities or politicians who are TG and a handful of others who have made the news for dubious reasons or possibly heinous crimes. But when we walk down the street, do people stop and gasp or whatever they do, or do they just go on with their own activities?

Personally I don't think we are news anymore. Although I pass rather well, I do live in the open about my circumstances and have found that people who learn of my circumstances are maybe somewhat surprised, but nothing to write home about. I can hear others saying "It is easy for you to say, but in my small town they would string me up if they knew." Would they? Would they really, or is it just fear that keeps someone believing that?

I believe not being news anymore is advantageous to us. First it is a sign that people know we are out there. We are no longer a taboo subject like porn, we are reality. And with that I think we have a great opportunity to further educate the public by getting out there more and projecting a positive image of our community.

    Hugs,

    Good and thoughtful post.

Wider society still regards it as news, but things are rapidly changing. And it's certainly not the shock it once was. And Marsha, you might be pleased to know that I often cite you as a friend who proves it is possible to transition in a small town

    Hugs

I have to agree, we are just no longer news.

We used to get a two page spread in the nationals, now we get two lines in a local freebie!

I know this is partly because newspapers and other publications have to tread carefully between all the rules and regs regarding all 'differences', but it does seem to me that we are now generally accepted as being yet another part of a diverse society. That is not saying everyone accepts us per se, obviously, but the majority do now seem to ignore the variations on the theme of LGBT more than ever, certainly as much as they do goth, hippy, emo, uniforms and all the rest. The outright nationalists engender more emotive outbursts now than we ever did!

Mostly I am quite happy with things as they are and the way they are going, but I did once when I started on my own journey half hope I might become news and sell my story for a huge fee, but it wasn't to be...

Lordy, Marsha!!!! I hope it's news or what am I doing The Gender Society Transgender News feed for? If we are not news, and are accepted, what poor group will be the next to be isolated and abused for natural inclinations?
