I've had this book for some time. it's written by Peter Ackroyd. It's sub titled The History of an Obsession.

It starts with ancient cultures and moves on to modern times. Revealing along the way how we used to ne honoured for the way we are, not seen as oddities. But as high priestesses, witch doctors and advisors to royalty!

a good bibliography is included to guide those that wish more indepth study.

Glad you liked the book, it's very well researched and has a bibliography with some excellent titles for more indepth study. Lot of Freud but, what the heck he must have known something, right?
