We had to change the name because the word ‘tranny’ became increasingly toxic and we had to change our rickety old software because the developers would no longer support it.
I vaguely remember we had asked the existing members to come up with a new name and Gender Society won. I think a lot of our members at the time wanted us to distance our community from the other cattle market sites out there so we needed to sound more respectable.Trannyweb was a busy and vibrant community though (started in 1999) with lots of people online at any one time. The forums were the jewel in the crown as you can see from the huge number of threads and forum posts (which by the way, are still available today).
The transition to The Gender Society took place in 2011. Unfortunately, a lot of the long-time regulars who used to be permanently logged in, didn’t like the change... less

Gender variant (trans or transgender) people are relatively rarely seen in GP surgeries. Many GPs say that they lack the knowledge to treat those experiencinggender variant conditions and, consequently, they are not confident to do so.The first part of this publication provides an overview of care for trans people that is particularly applicable to GPs. Hormone therapy is central to transgender primarycare, and issues such as assessment and diagnosis are also relevant to general practice. These topics are discussed in greater detail in Annexes C and D. Clinical care for gender variant people should be provided within a framework of good practice that emphasises patient autonomy, allows for the wide variety of needs among trans people and is flexible in its clinical responses to those needs. It should also take account... less

I just wished you were in the states to give such accurate content, but then under this current administration and political conflict I think you might find it quite egregious,
There was a time in the states when we were moving in a very positive direction, sadly we have faltered and at best stagnated our trans direction.

When Trannyweb became the Gender society I gathered a few people to become site moderators lovely helpful team, keeping the site clear of trolls, keeping the home page clear of sleaze and wiping out literally 1000's of spams. Shame that when I stepped back from heading up that team due to studying and work I was unable to devote as much attention as the site needed many of the site and forum mods just seemed to vanish, lose interest. I will always remember some advice Katie gave mewhen in the early days of being a mod, I was verbally abused, it upset me and I threatened to leave,Katie said if someone on your land line gives you grief, do you cut your phone off. I had joined a couple of "straight" dating sites where the only option for gender was the binary "M" or "F". I'd check "F" but in my profile mention that I was a special girl with a little something different down below. I left it at that as far as being a trans woman while creating an interesting profile designed to attract an inteligent, well rounded, but open minded person.
I was very surprised at the number of men who reached out to me that actually understood just who I was and stated that they were very interested in learning more about me and wished to meet up, a typical response in a binary world. In further communication, quite a few expressed that they were totally fine with dating a passable trans woman while some fit into that "admirer" or even "chaser" mode as described in the thread earlier. Throughout our communication, I make it clear that I'm not your typical girl but do not say I'm trans unless they bring it... less

Yesterday, retired Colonel Diane Schroer won her Titile VII action against the Library of Congress. Schroer was denied a position there f or which she had initially been hired when hiring managers felt that despite her years of service as a high-ranking Pentagon officer and as a top secret cleared defense contractor, her transition might compromise her security clearance.
What's notable about this case is that Schroer pursued it as a Title VII gender discrimination case. This might set a precedent by which future trans discrimination cases will be fought by placing the emphasis on gender instead of gender identity. It remains to be seen whether this decision will stand up in appeal.
In Montgomery County, MD, a judge denied the motion by "Family First" to bring repeal of the County's non discrimination in public accommodations ordinance to a voter referendum in November. This defeat will set the precedent for similar cases in other locations.

Hate to agree with O'Reilly, but it makes more sense to keep Biden than drop him now.

The failed effort could have repealed the county law protecting people from discrimination based on gender identity depending upon voters' decision. However, the court decided that the anti-transgender measure must be removed from the November ballot because opponents did not collect enough valid signatures to qualify.
NCTE would like to acknowledge the work of the advocates who fought this ballot question, particularly noting excellent work by Basic Rights Montgomery, Equality Maryland, The Task Force, Lambda Legal and the Arnold and Porter law firm which did significant pro bono work on the effort.
According to NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling, "Montgomery County, Maryland was the second loss this year for anti-equality extremists... less

A NBC/Gallop poll yesterday showed McCain now up by 4% of everyone who participated, but McCain up by 15% of likely voters.
So will the young get out and vote? This question gets asked at every election and nothing ever changes, the young fail to turn out. Why?

As it stands right now, the U.S. will either have it's first african american president or its first woman vice president. How much of a factor if any do you think anti black racists or anti women sexists will play in this election?
Personally I think only the racist will play a role which will favor the republicans in the end. 90% of blacks always vote democrat anyways, so there is nothing for democrats to gain with a black candidate. Unfortunately in our real world, society is NOT colorblind as it should be. I think this hurts Obama. I don't see much of an issue with republicans being sexist, just that racist democrats just won't go vote.

Then there's the opposition, who are the leaders? Everyone seems to be a nobody at the moment, where have all the strong characters, (and therefore strong leaders) gone?
For example, love her or hate her, everyone knew who Maggie was, and I don't mean just the British here.
What is happening with British politics that it attracting all the grey men and women?

She is no longer on the ballot but low and behold Sarah Palin is the vice presidential running mate for John McCain.
Without arguing politics, do you think the world is ready for the United States to have a woman in such a high office? From a personal point because I know my abilities, I feel a woman would do the job just fine. But since I am from the U.S. I don't know what other's views of women leaders really are. Are those positions still really better off being held by a guy?

Reportedly, the person went to school dressed markedly en femme. No name or location was given in the news blurb.
What will make this a political issue is that the parents stated they will sue the school district for allowing their child to go to school en femme. The significance will depend on whether or not the district is in a state protecting TG/TS students' rights to go to school dressed as their self-identified gender and the state's obligation to protect all students at school. In addition, it could address the issue of whether or not parents can discriminate against GLBT children's right to express their gender/sexuality or if they can suppress their true Self.

I would like to start off pointing out the Ad Obama is running in Ohio saying how McCain has cost the state 8000 jobs because of allowing DHL to merge with Airborne Express. The AFL-CIO teamsters are saying because of how McCain voted in 2003 to an amendment which would have blocked the merger that these workers are being laid off. The facts are McCain did not vote for the amendment because it was tucked in a totally unrelated bill. Next was the fact that the AFL-CIO teamsters were in favor of the merger at that time. I guess they wanted it both ways and when it didn't work out they figured they could blame someone else and I guess they figure their members are too stupid to remember, maybe they are right. In my opinion unions are as corrupt as the rest of the politicians, no wonder they always support democrats. Oops, did I say that,... less

We pay an additional $30 or so a month for our prescriptions.
I'm looking at the the UK NIC tax chart http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni38.pdf and asking why should someone who went to school, worked hard, maybe started their own business and earns the equivalent of $60000 a year, pay about $1200per month in the UK. Now if you only make the equivalent of $2000 per month, again your own business so you are paying both sides, you only have to pay about $260 per month.
I want someone to intelligently explain why the person who worked hard to make more money has to pay 5 times as much for what I would think is the same health care coverage in the UK?
Often the U.S. health system is attacked because of the number of people without insurance. The facts are the poor receive medicaid which provides basic care and all hospitals are required to provide emergency service... less

Current mood: betrayed
I dont know how many of you are aware, but Joe S did make an apology to a few Transfolk behind closed doors. The point is that he apologized for "MIS-SPEAKING" at SCC in 2007. The apology was NOT for the betrayal of that promise.
Joe was apologizing for giving the Transgender people a verbal contract, not for breeching it. HRC has not ceased support of the 2007 decision in support of a non-inclusive ENDA. Where is the promise of EQUALITY? Isnt EQUALITY HRC's VERY LOGO? Where is the EQUALITY IN EXCLUSION??????
To quote one very astute Trans person: "HRC seems to be using the Transfolk as something to scare society with.... "Give us what we want or we will include the Trannys!"

The balance everyone sees at the gas pump is taxes and in the places you hear about low prices it is because of government subsidies.
So the question is, can you really blame the oil companies for the high prices? Another question is , do you feel the taxes you are paying on gas is being put to good use?
Personally I blame the politicians because they have allowed the environmental lobbyist to dictate legislation which has complicated bringing new energy to the market. I am not against getting away from fossil fuels, but until we actually have alternatives we need to exploit all currently available resources. Basically I believe in supply and demand. The environmentalist and politicians have limited the supply even as demand increases.
As for taxes, I believe there isn't a tax that politicians don't love. They always want more and can find... less

I think this is an unwarrented invasion into people's privacy especially given the government's record on not being able to keep information secret.
I fully expect that there are sufficient security establishments that keep an eye on phone, email and internet traffic already to be able to pick up on potential terrorist or security threats so I don't understand how this database can be justified on these terms.
Are we heading into a more and more Orwellian society - and what impact would that have on our way of life?
My own opinion is that the more we as a world go down the route of stricter and stricter security measures and removal of those rights that our ancestors fought so long and hard for, the more the terrorist has won and the less freedom we have.
What do you think?
