We had to change the name because the word ‘tranny’ became increasingly toxic and we had to change our rickety old software because the developers would no longer support it.
I vaguely remember we had asked the existing members to come up with a new name and Gender Society won. I think a lot of our members at the time wanted us to distance our community from the other cattle market sites out there so we needed to sound more respectable.Trannyweb was a busy and vibrant community though (started in 1999) with lots of people online at any one time. The forums were the jewel in the crown as you can see from the huge number of threads and forum posts (which by the way, are still available today).
The transition to The Gender Society took place in 2011. Unfortunately, a lot of the long-time regulars who used to be permanently logged in, didn’t like the change... less

Gender variant (trans or transgender) people are relatively rarely seen in GP surgeries. Many GPs say that they lack the knowledge to treat those experiencinggender variant conditions and, consequently, they are not confident to do so.The first part of this publication provides an overview of care for trans people that is particularly applicable to GPs. Hormone therapy is central to transgender primarycare, and issues such as assessment and diagnosis are also relevant to general practice. These topics are discussed in greater detail in Annexes C and D. Clinical care for gender variant people should be provided within a framework of good practice that emphasises patient autonomy, allows for the wide variety of needs among trans people and is flexible in its clinical responses to those needs. It should also take account... less

I just wished you were in the states to give such accurate content, but then under this current administration and political conflict I think you might find it quite egregious,
There was a time in the states when we were moving in a very positive direction, sadly we have faltered and at best stagnated our trans direction.

When Trannyweb became the Gender society I gathered a few people to become site moderators lovely helpful team, keeping the site clear of trolls, keeping the home page clear of sleaze and wiping out literally 1000's of spams. Shame that when I stepped back from heading up that team due to studying and work I was unable to devote as much attention as the site needed many of the site and forum mods just seemed to vanish, lose interest. I will always remember some advice Katie gave mewhen in the early days of being a mod, I was verbally abused, it upset me and I threatened to leave,Katie said if someone on your land line gives you grief, do you cut your phone off. What effect does female hormone therapy have on a male, and how... moreWhat effect does female hormone therapy have on a male, and how soon?
The longer after puberty hormone therapy is started, the less effective it is--but not a linear scale, e.g., results are considerably more dramatic in an 18 year old than a 28 year old, but results are not on the average dramatically different between a 38 year old and a 48 year old.
The following effects have been observed in varying degrees--anywhere from little to moderate--with extended treatment. With effective and continuous dosages, most of the changes that a particular body is genetically prone to start within 2 to 4 months, will start leveling off somewhat within 2 years, and be mostly done within 5 years. The leveling may take longer if the testes are not removed. High levels of estrogen will cause faster development up to a point, but not better results in the long term than moderate levels of estrogen..
Fertility decreases. Sperm count drops rapidly. Sometimes it returns to almost normal if hormonal treatment is... less

There are some filmmakers and performers who tell trans stories that are authentic and respectful. There are some superb trans characters in some movies like Agrado in All About My Mother, Vanessa in Gun Hill Road etc. I recently read a blog regarding this and I would like to share it here - http://www.ftmtopsurgery.ca/blog/best-transgender-movie/three-best-transgender-movie-roles/

I LOVE watching movies and will watch just about anything, any genre, any subject matter. It's definitely my favorite pastime, and my husband's too! Here are two movies that came out in 2015. Some possible spoilers ahead, but both movies are relatively straightforward, so nothing big is revealed in my writing. But still, for those who love to go into movies without knowing even a teensy bit (like me), read this after you see the movie (like me, I read reviews after I see the movie).
Tangerine
My husband and I watched this movie late last year. I didn't have my hopes up as I heard it was shot exclusively on an iPhone. How good can a movie be that's shot on an iPhone?! Oh, it can be GOOD! GREAT! We were captivated right away. It had that authentic indie film feel. We were quickly thrust into the trans prostitution world. The dialogue was realistic and funny, the acting was sooooo good by... less

When Sofia's mother suddenly dies, she reluctantly returns to the family home she swore never to go back to when her father Raymond decided to transition into a woman. Now for the first time Sofia is forced to confront the changes Raymond (now Donna) has undergone and come to terms with the consequences of her defiant choice. We believe that it's going to be an amazing film and we already have some film industry professional on board, however we need some more publicity and support.

Opens with the TG hanging from tree with boobs slashed with broken bottle.
CSI cut down and look at chest.
Then doing autopsy and lots of crap about pre-ops taking massive amounts of estrogen.
Then mention of seeking signs of Klinefelters but none.
Then says no other hormones in system.
Assistant jokes about the boobs being chesticles.
Lab tech says estrogen was very high.
CSI go see mother. 'My son is not a freak.'
CSI checks mobile phone and traces regular caller as an older guy. so no doubt the storyline will continue with the older guy paying the for sex.
CSI find coworker who hates transpeople.
Coworker says he and dead TG and girls go swimming and girls freak out when the wet tshirt shows the boobs.
Coworker says him and girl sleave quick in disgust leaving TG alive. less

I was thinking about television series's which are about or contain transgendered people - or where gender identity is addressed. Two came to mind immediately:
Boy meets girl: A six (?) part series where a man and a woman swap bodies, and he is interested to discover what life is like as her. It portrayed the M2F quite interestingly I thought, though the F2M was largely overlooked, mainly because there is less they can do withit for television.
Hunting Venus: a two part tlevision film about ten years ago starring Martin Clunes and Neil Morrisssey. Martin Clunes is attempting to put an eighties band back togethert, only to discover that the lead singer (Neil Morrissey) has had a sex change. Largely played for laughs, I enjoyed this for the obviouis reasons. less

What is the general opinion of the transvestite storyline on Coronation Street? Personally I think the Mark / Marcia thing is poorly presented and obviously done just for television. Programs like this have a duty to represent minority groups in an accurate and sympathetic light, not just playing for ratings.

Since then, seeing most susequent movies, I believe mr keaton was far better than chaplin or lloyd.

Tim Burton
Fritz Lang
Buster Keaton
Sam Peckinpaw
Ken Russell
Edgar G. Ulmer
Orson Welles
David Lynch
James Whale
Joel (& Ethan) Coen
Tod Browning
Stanley Kubrick
Quentin Tarantino
Ed D. Wood, Jr.
Preston Sturges
Charlie Chaplin
Erich Von Stroheim
(oops, I forgot) Terry Gilliam
There are lots of other directors whose work I admire/love/respect, but the list above are, to me, the most interesting.

Janis, I'm so glad you mentioned "Local Hero" it's a wonderful movie and as soon as I saw a Scot represented in this thread I immediately thought of that film.
