We had to change the name because the word ‘tranny’ became increasingly toxic and we had to change our rickety old software because the developers would no longer support it.
I vaguely remember we had asked the existing members to come up with a new name and Gender Society won. I think a lot of our members at the time wanted us to distance our community from the other cattle market sites out there so we needed to sound more respectable.Trannyweb was a busy and vibrant community though (started in 1999) with lots of people online at any one time. The forums were the jewel in the crown as you can see from the huge number of threads and forum posts (which by the way, are still available today).
The transition to The Gender Society took place in 2011. Unfortunately, a lot of the long-time regulars who used to be permanently logged in, didn’t like the change... less

Gender variant (trans or transgender) people are relatively rarely seen in GP surgeries. Many GPs say that they lack the knowledge to treat those experiencinggender variant conditions and, consequently, they are not confident to do so.The first part of this publication provides an overview of care for trans people that is particularly applicable to GPs. Hormone therapy is central to transgender primarycare, and issues such as assessment and diagnosis are also relevant to general practice. These topics are discussed in greater detail in Annexes C and D. Clinical care for gender variant people should be provided within a framework of good practice that emphasises patient autonomy, allows for the wide variety of needs among trans people and is flexible in its clinical responses to those needs. It should also take account... less

I just wished you were in the states to give such accurate content, but then under this current administration and political conflict I think you might find it quite egregious,
There was a time in the states when we were moving in a very positive direction, sadly we have faltered and at best stagnated our trans direction.

When Trannyweb became the Gender society I gathered a few people to become site moderators lovely helpful team, keeping the site clear of trolls, keeping the home page clear of sleaze and wiping out literally 1000's of spams. Shame that when I stepped back from heading up that team due to studying and work I was unable to devote as much attention as the site needed many of the site and forum mods just seemed to vanish, lose interest. I will always remember some advice Katie gave mewhen in the early days of being a mod, I was verbally abused, it upset me and I threatened to leave,Katie said if someone on your land line gives you grief, do you cut your phone off. The longer after puberty hormone therapy is started, the less effective it is--but not a linear scale, e.g., results are considerably more dramatic in an 18 year old than a 28 year old, but results are not on the average dramatically different between a 38 year old and a 48 year old.
The following effects have been observed in varying degrees--anywhere from little to moderate--with extended treatment. With effective and continuous dosages, most of the changes that a particular body is genetically prone to start within 2 to 4 months, will start leveling off somewhat within 2 years, and be mostly done within 5 years. The leveling may take longer if the testes are not removed. High levels of estrogen will cause faster development up to a point, but not better results in the long term than moderate levels of estrogen..
Fertility decreases. Sperm count drops rapidly. Sometimes it returns to almost normal if hormonal treatment is... less

I was really surprised by that. I remember at the time thinking that losing the word 'tranny' would be a good move and would prevent the undesirabel types bothering to look but I didn't think it sounded elitist.
I also left the site at that time but for different reasons, which I will not go into. I pop back occasionally to see how things are and of course, almost no one is here from the TW days. People move on, you don't visit the same local bar for 20 years after all, so different people coming and going is normal I believe.
I'm curoius as to what attracted new members to here though, as I assume that they didn't think the name was elitist? I also wonder if, like myself, they spent ages in the forums finding out so much useful information, and then moved into the chat room to speak directly to... less

Other peoples experiences can help others so much. It can be what some consider to be a small problem with an easy answer but to the person asking the question it could be a big thing. Just because to some it may seem a minor thing does not mean it is to others.
These forums are a mine of information and most of the answers are alrealy there but it means a new member has to search for the answer they want. Asking a question in a new topic means the person normally gets answers within hours or even minutes. Those answers are not one size fits all so the more people that join in means the person asking the question is more likely to get the answer they are after. The Transgender world has so many questions and the ones that have been through or are going through the same can tell of their experiences in response to others.

Every day, we experience a whole range of emotions, and we can all remember times when we have been annoyed, irritated, angry or downright enraged!
The biological basis for anger can be found in the well known ‘fight or flight’ response, and a common trigger for anger is feeling endangered. This danger does not need to be physical – the threat may well be to our dignity, belief system or self esteem, but the end product is the same.
It used to be thought that venting our anger on an inanimate object was an acceptable way of dealing with it, but while that may be cathartic, and give a temporary sense of satisfaction, it can also lead to broken windows, holes in walls and other unwanted problems! More importantly, it does not help the individual to manage anger effectively in the future.
Anger produces considerable physiological change – our heart rate and blood pressure... less

I believe that less than a Dollar a week is good value for what is here. One thing that does bug me though is the number of new members that join here weekly never to be seen again.
There could be many reasons for that. They may have thought this website is like other ones , you know the ones that are full of sexual content.
What makes GS unique is its lack of sexual content though. So about 30 or even 50 new members per week fall down a big black hole never to be seen again. It is rare that they stay.
GS is like a big family! Not huge but in family terms it is big . The heart of this website is its forums in the input into them by its members. All over the forums you will see the words Former Member! That includes myself. Sometimes I look back 5 or 6 years and think did I really say that? . Yep I did , and I have not changed much. All First off, I hope I do not upset anyone with this post. Please note that I recognise the possibility of the content being upsetting to some but at the same time I am trying to better understand some issues that affect our community. I am writing this in a genuine attempt to deepen understanding and 'ventilate' issues we may face. I therefore apologise in advance and hope that you read this in the spirit and tone that it is intended.
I am writing an article for Frock magazine (frockmagazine.com) on the connotations of the word 'tranny'. If you do not mind assisting in this survey, could you please reply to this thread by answering the following questions:
1. Where do you live (country is fine)?
2. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the most negative) how negatively do you feel about the word 'tranny'?
3. Does the word 'tranny' have any positive connotations?
4. Would you ever use the word 'tranny'?
5. If so how, when etc?
6. Has anyone ever used the word 'tranny' offensively against you personally... less

I do not want to go to one I would rather eat the grass off the lawn but , some seem to think they exist. Why did I just say that?. Because I do not believe they do! They are there but for what reason?. My guess is they want your money , I mean you have an illness don't you?. If you are Lesbian or bi sexual - Gay or Transgender they say you are ill and you can be cured.
So it has to be a money making game. Take Amy Hepker as just one example to start. Amy says God will sort things out for her but , God hasn't. She says there are LGBT friendly churches near her but do they help? . Well she can go there and pray! That is it , nothing else. I wonder why that is?. Another guess is she has no money. So that is how friendly they are to Amy , we cannot help you find shelter or even give you shelter , you cannot even park your car on the church car park but there is a store down the road where you can.
Please add you thoughts. They could be a few lines or even a poem , just say how you feel. I am going to have to put my beliefs aside here. Leelah you did not deserve this , you had your whole life ahead of you and it was cut short by pure ignorance. What your parents done to drive you taking your life is not Christian! They are not Christian.
If lessons cannot be learnt from pain you suffered now then they never will be.
I wish I could have been there , not only to stop you but also to show you people do understand and care. You were alone though and there is no changing that. You are now one of the most talked about people on this planet but for all of the wrong reasons. The love that has been shown now is far to late but it is here.
You are at peace now you sweet young soul. I wish I had known you just to show you life can be good.

Leelah died tormented, lost, unloved (as far as she was concerned), a victim of bias, prejudice and, yes, hatred in her own town, and even in her own own family, of disbelief and arrogance and mis-guided religious principles.
Her "so called " Christian" therapists asked her to look to God for help. They treated her - as far as I can see - as someone tainted, diseased. Not much love there, was there? I know that here on GS, we have a broad spectrum of people some of whom hav a religious belief, and some who have none.
In this situation, it is not important. What is important that here we have a young person so tormented and hurt that she felt she had no... less

This post I'll just briefly touch on with my own situation and rather bring up the major point I was looking into which is the difficulties of perception and change of role that we play amongst our family structure.
As for what happened to me. I had arranged a weekend to be spent with my father and his new wife and her son/my stepbrother. I'd talked about them staying 4 or 5 days and hopefully tying up some loose ends in property dealings with my father. I was thinking just us four together for a few days and hopefully some outings together. They have interacted with me the most of extended family since I started my transition and I feel fairly comfortable around them. Upon them arriving that evening we made our greetings and started talking pleasantries. He informed me he had talked to his brother and was going there (60 miles away)the... less

It's very disappointing to post something in the forum, something that is hard to express as some of us are just coming out of the closet, and barely a response.
I joined another site, free, and have made several new friends. Chat has people on it in the evenings, esp on the weekends. People converse on the forums regularly and are great about suggestions and giving hope. Here, all I hear is the echo of my own voice. :(

I cannot pretend to know what it is like to be a Cross dresser or a Transvestite for the simple reason I am a Transexual woman.
The following was posted by a member on the home page today as a response to a question.
"So called Transvestites a very significant number who are actually in realality merely sexual perverts with major issues who masquerade as us and give us girls a reputation we do not deserve"
I find that statement very disrespectfull to any Transvestites on this website or anywhere. The member who posted it was as usual not showing an image of themself. They also say they are Transsexual.
Being Transsexual in no way makes us any better than any other member of society. It is by no means easy having Gender Dysphoria but from all of the Trans people I have met I have yet to meet a Transvestite that matches the... less
